The Pentagon Paid 14 NFL Teams $5.4 Million To 'Salute Troops'

Source: Business Insider

May 12, 2015, 11:16 AM 2,217 2

The NFL reportedly accepted millions of dollars from the defense department over the course of three years in exchange for honoring troops and veterans before games, the New Jersey Star Ledger reports.

The Pentagon reportedly signed contracts with 14 NFL teams — including the New York Jets, the Indianapolis Colts and the Baltimore Ravens — between 2011-2012 stipulating that teams would be paid sums ranging from $60,000-$1 million each (in federal taxpayer money) to pause before the start of games and salute the city's "hometown heroes," according to nj.com.

Agreements also include advertising on stadium screens and sideline 'Coaches Club' seats for soldiers.

Congress and the President recently imposed strict caps on military spending as part of an austere new budget.

I'm beginning to believe that only the proles are taxed at any consistent rate.

The plutes (plutocrats/oligarchs) either forget to declare or have lots of ways to offshore funds and/or minimalize their taxes. This really irks me the most. Our $s being spent on beltway bandits that won't even pay their fair share.

So the DoD took your tax dollars, gave them to various fat cats that own the teams to promote more something --- since I don't watch tv crap, what were the ads promoting? Murder, invasions, drone attacks?

I think if we cut out the positive feedback loop like the yellow ribbons, the NSO, the tv ads that promote being part of the MIPC, the give-a-shit ratio in the US would plummet. All we might see is some maimed vets or caskets offloaded in Dover. The impressionable 18yo is being sold a bill of goods which has a high chance of rendering him/her incapable of working at a good job.

This makes me sick. I often feel queasy when the troops who really "battle" are paraded out on the fields before the clash of the pawns of millionaire owners engage in games that satisfy societal blood lust. The "good will" points that the teams "earn" with this support should at the very least be funded by the money machines they operate NOT TAXPAYERS! Just another crystal clear reason to CUT the Pentagon budget!!! Boondoggles, waste, bone-yards of equipment and faked promos all take precedence over support for the troops while they serve (on food stamps) and after Veterans Affairs and Med services. ENOUGH!

After listening to the facts as put forth by KO I feel that the biggest sin was hiding that this was paid advertising. I acknowledge that the military has a certain budget for recruiting (I don't necessarily agree with the amount or how it's spent, but that's for another discussion). The fact is that these 'events' were paid for out of the recruitment budget, and that should have been disclosed.

Since high school, I have made a point of being in the concourse during the ritual singing of the National Anthem (complete with faux-armed, uniformed color guard) at sporting events. I do not believe that this is the practice in any country outside of North America.

From now on, I will offer my participation in this jingoistic ritual in exchange for the admission price to the event (including convenience fee). It only seems fair that if the Pentagon will pay the league teams for this charade, that I be paid to participate as well.....
