Missouri Senate Democrats delay vote on right-to-work bill

JEFFERSON CITY — Senate Democrats were delaying a vote Tuesday on a right-to-work measure that they denounced as an attack on workers' collective bargaining rights.

The Senate debate lingered for hours, with some Republican opponents and several Democrats speaking against the measure that would prohibit union contracts with employers that require the collection of fees from nonmembers. Senate Majority Leader Ron Richard, R-Joplin, has said that his priority — right to work — will get done before anything else as the Friday deadline for bills to pass nears.

Democratic senators clearly signaled they were not planning to allow a vote on the measure. They said it would lower wages, make training more difficult and decrease workplace safety.Sen. Jason Holsman, D-Kansas City, said it was a political ploy, because the Republicans don't appear to have enough votes to override a veto by Democratic Gov. Jay Nixon.

"We're not sitting down this time," Holsman said. "This is not something that we believe can be mitigated, compromised."
