Conservatives in Egypt Back Liberal to Oppose Brotherhood
Source: New York Times
Egypts most conservative Islamists endorsed a liberal Islamist for president late Saturday night, upending the political landscape and confounding expectations about the internal dynamics of the Islamist movement.
The main missionary and political groups of the ultraconservatives, known as Salafis, threw their support behind Abdel Moneim Aboul Fotouh, a dissident former leader of the Muslim Brotherhood known for his tolerant and inclusive view of Islamic law.
The endorsement goes a long way toward making Mr. Aboul Fotouh the front-runner in a campaign that could shape the ultimate outcome of the revolt that ousted the former strongman, Hosni Mubarak.
Mr. Aboul Fotouhs liberal understanding of Islamic law on matters of individual freedom and economic equality had already made him the preferred candidate of many Egyptian liberals.

(10,745 posts)It almost certainly WILL at some point, bar a massive and violent second revolution from the Egyptian people. I'm sorry, but even if Fotouh is genuinely liberal, he may still be a puppet, if not just a well-meaning dupe, the ultra-conservatives are still likely to be running things. I really do hope the Egyptians wake up, they deserve better than have to deal with these shenanigans.

(10,745 posts)Granted, the Muslim Brotherhood may not necessarily be at the top, but they will likely retain some control. And despite all the public shows they put on, they really don't hate each other all that much. It's nothing more than a game, a trick. I do believe Fotouh may genuinely be liberal but he is definitely being used by the Salafis.
When are the Egyptian people going to be able to vote for a good candidate without strings attached? Or could such a guy possibly end up like our JFK did?

To be honest, Skinner, this man, Fotouh, may be genuinely liberal. But if he is, why was he in the Brotherhood?
And, quite honestly, something smells off about this anyway. My research tells me that the MB and the other conservatives have always appeared to be the two sides of the same coin and frankly, no legitimate evidence I've seen has been able to contradict that.
The situation in Egypt really does need to be watched closely. There are many good people in that country who don't know the truth yet.......let's hope that things change for the better, and soon.
Also, my apologies for misreading the article, everyone. Skinner was kind enough to point that out(seriously, thanks. .

The fact that you missed that rather salient fact leads me to be somewhat skeptical of your "research" that you refer to. What is the nature of your research?

I can't say anything about the purveyors of said articles but the information does appear to check out:

You may have noticed a few mentions of a guy by the name of John Loftus, who has been one of the top researchers in this field. I don't know much about his politics but he seems to be pro-Democrat, and anti-GOP from what I have gathered(I do hope I'm not wrong here. I have listened to this guy for 2 years now).
It may not be the best information on this issue, but it is genuine from what I understand.
(oops, I just now realized I accidentally replied to one of my own comments instead of Skinner's. Sorry folks.)

(10,745 posts)I'm terribly sorry, but a 'liberal' Islamist? Fuck no. If this guy, Fotouh, is a genuine liberal then he is certainly no actual Islamist; a true Islamist is an extremely hardcore(usually), conservative(always) who hates women, Jews, and even, in most case, any other Muslim who doesn't conform to their views. Frankly, if this guy is for real I'm surprised his fellow 'Brothers' haven't killed him yet; he just isn't suited for this organization.
Honestly, shame on the New York Times, for claiming that there is such a thing as a liberal Islamist(no sarcasm here, btw).

(10,745 posts)I know it may be hard to believe but the Islamists aren't nice people.
However, though, one must understand that they are only a very small fraction of the worldwide Muslim population.
Frankly, I sincerely believe that the majority of Muslims are kind and decent people, and would be saddened if they knew the truth about the MB and its origins.
And, I have come across some evidence in recent months suggesting that certain neo-con bigwigs, Grover Norquist in particular, might have been involved with the Brotherhood(unfortunately, though, it seems that the right-wing discreditation machine has been hard at work trying to make fools out of anyone brave enough to look at the information.), particularly exposed by Operation Green Quest(there are a quite a few threads that have been posted on DU about this subject, or at least mentioning it, it seems).
