Trade bill clears Senate hurdle
Source: CNN
Washington (CNN)A free trade initiative that is pitting President Barack Obama against his own party cleared a major procedural hurdle in the Republican-controlled Senate on Thursday.
The 62-38 vote to end debate on the bill, moving it toward a final vote, was a victory for Obama, who had linked with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Kentucky, to push the bill despite opposition from Senate Democratic leaders.
McConnell said he's willing to consider a host of amendments that Democrats are poised to offer later Thursday.
"This last vote was a major step forward on this important legislation," said Utah Sen. Orrin Hatch, a Republican who sponsored the bill.
The Senate is now set to vote on changes to the bill, including one that would force the Obama administration to use trade deals to crack down on countries that manipulate the value of their currencies to give their exports a price advantage in the United States an amendment the White House opposes because it would add a huge new complication into trade negotiations.

(39,215 posts)Found the info in an article on thehill.com:
"Democratic Sens. Patty Murray (Wash.), Maria Cantwell (Wash.) and Jeanne Shaheen (N.H.) were among the final Democratic "yes" votes. "
and:
"The other Democrats who voted to end debate were Sens. Tom Carper (Del.), Claire McCaskill (Mo.), Dianne Feinstein (Calif.), Heidi Heitkamp (N.D.), Chris Coons (Del.), Mark Warner (Va.), Michael Bennet (Colo.), Tim Kaine (Va.), Bill Nelson (Fla.) and Ron Wyden (Ore.), the ranking member of the Senate Finance Committee."
I'll be contacting Bill Nelson's office later to express my disappointment.

(24,701 posts)Thom Hartmann said, call your Senator and express to them a thank you for voting against this measure.
Which I am going to do with Senators Cardin and Mikulski:
clap:
In my next rant:
As for those that voted for it:
You are a hypocrite to your constituents, and to this country-----------if you have not figured out why are inner cities are decaying, why, people cannot afford to pay for there water, gas, electricity, and have no income, high crime, having Mayors in cities saying they are doing what they can to help there constituents, and then getting "deals" like this again and again---a policy of failed trade bills ect...... you should have a clue---------- one big clue------------its called unfair trade bills.
Which are causing this country to become a third world state-----------
Why, look at what manufacturing which use to be done here in cities, like Baltimore, Detroit, Long Beach, is now done in China, which is causing to create even in a Authoritarian Capitalists society, a middle class, which we use to have, how much more of a picture does it take for you to smell the coffee, roses, or are you just that narrow minded in your thinking.
Because those that keep voting like this, you are only worried about getting to your next primary, instead of core principles and values to the American worker.
You are a supporter of 40 years of Reagan policy, you are euphuistically what are called ------------ sell outs to corporations, even though, there are those that will say China has nothing to do with this legislation---------wrong it is about China, Nafta, Cafta, Korea, Japan ect......

I wonder how those 62 that voted FOR fast-track will vote AGAINST the TPP?
Yeah. I thought so too.

I do not agree with President Obama because I think TPP is bad for our country but also because I do not think giving multi-national corporations more power is good for any country.
That is not hate. It is a reason. Hate is what his partners on TPP (Rs) have been doing since the day he was inaugurated. I for one am asking why he trusts them on this. They and their supporters really do hate him.

(13,058 posts)I hate TPP, not the president with whom I agree on many issues. Why has it got to the point where some people throw out the "hate" word when someone has a principled disagreement with President Obama?

(1 post)It's unbelievable that these things are happening in our lifetime. Complete corporate control of the United States of America. They've always had sway, but now the have control we have no recourse because of NAFTA, CAFTA and soon to be SHAFTA aka TPP. New World Order indeed. Welcome to the new Plutocratic era.
I will no longer vote for any Democrats, except Bernie Sanders. Bye bye Dems.

(11,175 posts)For those who stood up to a President of their own party and voted in the interest of the people, it's not fair to condemn them just because they share a party affiliation label with the 13 who voted with the Republicans.
The situation in the House will be similar: Most Republicans for the bill, some against; most Democrats against the bill, some for.
