Islamic State Group Uses Iraq Dam To Reduce Water Supplied To Government-Held Areas

Source: Associated Press

By SINAN SALAHEDDIN | Associated Press | 3 hours, 36 minutes ago in Politics

BAGHDAD (AP) — Islamic State militants have reduced the amount of water flowing to government-held areas in Iraq's western Anbar province, an official said Thursday, the latest in the vicious war as Iraqi forces struggle to claw back ground held by the extremists in the Sunni heartland.

It's not the first time that water has been used as a weapon of war in Mideast conflicts and in Iraq in particular. Earlier this year, the Islamic State group reduced the flow through another lock outside the militant-held town of Fallujah, also in Anbar province. But the extremists soon reopened it after criticism from residents.

The IS captured Ramadi, the provincial capital of Anbar, last month, marking its most significant victory since a U.S.-led coalition began an air campaign against the extremists last August. Earlier last year, the Islamic State had blitzed across much of western and northern Iraq, capturing key Anbar cities and also Mosul, Iraq's second-largest city that lies to the north of Baghdad.

Also Thursday, U.N. officials urgently called for almost $498 million in donations to provide shelter, food, water and other life-saving services for the next six months to Iraqis displaced or affected by the fighting between government forces and the Islamic State group.

US Air Force targets and destroys ISIS HQ building after spotting it through social media

An ISIS headquarters building was taken out by three Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM) missiles less than 24 hours after the U.S. Air Force’s 361st ISR (Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance) Group spotted a person posting a selfie outside of the building on social media.

“The guys that were working down out of Hurlburt, they’re combing through social media and they see some moron standing at this command,” the head of Air Combat Command shared during an Air Force Association hosted breakfast meeting in Washington D.C.

“And in some social media, open forum, bragging about the command and control capabilities for Daesh, ISIL. And these guys go: ‘We got an in.’ So they do some work, long story short, about 22 hours later through that very building, three [Joint Direct Attack Munitions] take that entire building out.”

He was careful not to share sensitive details about the location of the building and airstrike, but he noted how ISIS’ enthusiasm of social media was turned against them in this case, reports DefenseTech.

by troops I mean Obama should parachute bush, cheney, rumsfeld. wolfowitz & rice behind enemy lines. Give them a days worth of food and ammo, they shouldn't need much more then that. Maybe McCain would volunteer to go with them.

has proven good at one thing- leaving unused weapons on the battlefield as they run away in terror.
