Russia backs Ukraine peace deal but Kiev is blocking progress, says Putin

Source: Reuters

Russia fully backs the Minsk peace agreements in Ukraine, but progress is being stalled by Kiev, the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, said in an interview in Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera on Saturday.

“Russia is interested in and will strive to ensure the full and unconditional implementation of the Minsk Agreements,” he said, according to a transcript released by the Kremlin, calling the February deal “right, just and feasible”.

His comments came a few days after the most serious outbreak of fighting in eastern Ukraine since February’s ceasefire, which has cast doubt on the durability of the peace deal.

Putin said large-scale hostilities in eastern Ukraine had on the whole ceased and a pull-back of heavy weapons had been implemented, despite occasional shooting and casualties.

The problem is that the current government represented minority parties and was only able to gain power through force. The election last may was only successful for the National Front Party because of those who had no confidence did not vote and a lot of the population was disinfranchised.

So if things wind down in the East and federalization keeps Kiev from playing Right Wing voting games, they lose power.

For that reason it will take serious pressure from the west to accomplish something like the Minsk agreement.
