Evacuation urged for McCool Junction residents; west fork of Big Blue expected to crest tonight

McCOOL JUNCTION, Neb. — Residents in the village of McCool Junction and several rural residential areas were asked to evacuate Saturday after a flood warning was issued. The west fork of the Big Blue River is expected to crest tonight.

Mayor Steve Green said the city “could be looking at the worst flooding here in the last 50 or 80 years.” The town of about 400 people is about 100 miles southwest of Omaha.

Officials issued the activation order shortly before 10:30 a.m. By 11, city workers began going door to door, asking residents to leave their homes.

“As of right now, we are having evacuations in the village itself,” Green said. “We are also going to evacuate Spring Lake Estates and we are asking Sacks Lake residents to leave their homes as well.”

Flooding concerns in southeast Nebraska have subsided for now, authorities said Sunday.

The York County Sheriff's Office said flood water hadn't risen or lowered early this morning; authorities do not anticipate evacuations in the county today.

Meanwhile, the Seward County Sheriff's Office are closing some roads due to flooding, though conditions likely will not require emergency action.
