Report: Abortions down in almost all states since 2010

Source: AP

Abortions have declined in states where new laws make it harder to have them — but they've also waned in states where abortion rights are protected, an Associated Press survey finds. Nearly everywhere, in red states and blue, abortions are down since 2010.

Explanations vary. Abortion-rights advocates attribute it to expanded access to effective contraceptives and a drop in unintended pregnancies. Some foes of abortion say there has been a shift in societal attitudes, with more women choosing to carry their pregnancies to term.

Several of the states that have been most aggressive in passing anti-abortion laws — including Indiana, Missouri, Ohio, and Oklahoma — have seen their abortion numbers drop by more than 15 percent since 2010. But more liberal states such as New York, Washington and Oregon also had declines of that magnitude, even as they maintained unrestricted access to abortion.

Nationwide, the AP survey showed a decrease in abortions of about 12 percent since 2010.

A combination of fewer unplanned pregnancies, more birth control and less sex?

BIRTH CONTROL PREVENTS ABORTIONS!!!!

Oh, silly me! I forgot! It's not about preventing abortions, it's about PUNISHING women for having sex!

is that the anti-abortion crowd and their crisis pregnancy centers are encouraging girls and young women to carry the pregnancies to term. For an instant they are lauded as martyrs for doing so. They are lent baby supplies and are treated kindly - until the birth. Then they are on their own. In my community there are many single young mothers with no resources other than welfare to exist.

I would like to see more statistics that illustrate what the life of a single young mother looks like.

but maybe in the restrictive states unreported abortions are unknown. Could easily be on the increase.

but in South Texas there seems to be an increase in the number of women that travel to Mexico for abortions and obtain RU-486 through black market means.

The well-off have always been able to fly to Canada, London, Amsterdam, etc. to have an abortion and a weekend of shopping. These cases are never counted. Also, many abortions are carried out in private OB/GYN offices, listed as a miscarriage.

The anti-abortion theocrats only hurt poor and middle-class women.

A successful program giving teenage girls IUD's was unfunded by our new Republican controlled Senate. You know, because all those secret abortions caused by IUD's. The anti choicers want to interfere with birth control as much as possible. Control those women, bottom line.

Good to see you back, TexasTowelie. Hope you're healthier and all problems are behind you.

then I had a brain MRI scheduled for Thursday that I went to, but had to wait until Friday since they also needed to do blood work since I'm diabetic and the blood analyzer at that hospital was not working. The MRI was a weird experience, particularly after injecting the dye since it leaves a salty taste in the mouth that made me want to gag. I'll be getting the report back this week. In some ways I actually hope that they discover a problem because it would explain why I don't feel well and could lead to changes for my treatment plan.
