Truck hits tree and bees attack; 3 injured, deputy stung

Source: AP

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Three people were critically injured and a sheriff's deputy badly stung after a catering truck lost control and jumped a curb, hitting a tree and triggering a swarm of angry displaced bees.

City News Service reports that the catering truck was driving downhill on Saturday above the Sunset Strip in Los Angeles, when the driver lost control and hit the tree and street pole.

A sheriff's deputy tried to help three injured people trapped in the wrecked truck and surrounded by thousands of angry bees.

The descendants of honey bees that swarmed from hobby or commercial hives. A queen is part of a natural swarm which is normally very calm. If they can establish a new hive, they'll thrive. Southern California is a near perfect environment. That attacking swarm may be Africanized bees; they are very aggressive.

There would have been hundreds of stings on everyone, including the three injured. The deputy was hauled off to the hospital because he has an allergic reaction to his stings.
