Escaped killers remain on the loose

Source: Albany Times-Union

DANNEMORA - Two murderers who escaped from Clinton Correctional Facility remained on the run Monday morning, officials said.

Local, state and federal authorities are searching the village and surrounding Adirondack Mountain wilderness for Richard Matt, 48, and David Sweat, 34, who authorities said pulled off a sophisticated escape that on Sunday left authorities with no confirmed sightings of either man.

Prison guards discovered that the men were missing during an early morning bed check on Saturday. The discovery triggered a massive manhunt and the revelation that the men used power tools to cut their way out of their cells and steam pipes in the bowels of the prison before climbing out of a manhole in the village.

ABC News reported Monday morning that one of the men might have had a relationship with a woman who worked at the prison. ABC says police interviewed the woman.

One shot a cop 22 times, the other beat his boss to death and dismembered him.
Neither of them shouldve ever had an opportunity to escape.
Never any doubt as to the guilt of either of them.

Is as close as you come to putting them under the prison in New York State.

The fact that they escaped is rather remarkable.

If these guys had outside help (i.e., a ride out of the area), they might be long, long gone by now.

In 2007 - about a year after I moved from Western NY to New Jersey.

Maybe they've been in for a long time.
And even if it has been abolished, they're STILL the perfect candidates!

Commit a few murders - and you work to get on the jury.

Matt wasn't convicted until 2008.
Sweat 2002.
Governor Pataki reinstated the death penalty via lethal injection in 1995.
New York court of appeals declared in unconstitutional in 2007.
I believe we still have a few death row inmates at that time and their sentences were converted to life.
Governor Patterson order the removal of the death penalty equipment from all facilities in 2008.

I remember Mr. Rickerson's murder. I lived in Amherst traveled through Tonowanda to get to University - had a few friends that lived there. Very chilling that these guys are out.

They are probably heading towards Canada. If not - they could hide out in the Adirondacks for a long time without getting caught.

And I think the longer Sweat is on the run - the higher the likelihood that Matt offs him.

But I think you're right; it would make more sense to head into Canada. But its also easy to fade away down on the Florida beaches
