Kansas House considers new tax plan after governor's plea
Source: AP
TOPEKA, Kan. -- Top Republicans were pressing the Kansas House early Friday morning to approve a new plan for raising taxes hours after top aides to GOP Gov. Sam Brownback warned them that failing to erase a budget deficit risked funding for universities and invited a downgrading of the state's bond ratings.
Legislators in past years backed the GOP governor by slashing personal income taxes in an effort to stimulate the economy, but those policies contributed to a budget deficit that ballooned this year.
Brownback was forced Thursday to publicly plead with Republican legislators to increase the state's sales and cigarette taxes to balance the next state budget. His pitch and his aides' warnings that he would otherwise have to take drastic action early next week pushed GOP lawmakers into tinkering with a plan that had failed early Thursday in the House by a wide margin. They considered a package of two bills.
"Time's running out," said Republican Rep. Rick Billinger, of Goodland. "We can't go any longer."

(95,337 posts)now their state is one of the healthiest states budget-wise in the nation. Unemployment is down to 4% and there a surplus the state government which could be turned around to create jobs to help rebuild infrastructure. Oh and their minimum wage is going up to $9.50/hour.
If I had to move from Delaware and forced to live in either Kansas or Minnesota guess which state I would pick to live!

(36,063 posts)MN unemployment was reported -under- 4%, at 3.7% in March.
Walker was absolutely certain that WI would be pilfering jobs from MN with lower taxes. Mostly it hasn't gone that way.
Managing complex systems using simple 'obvious' ideologies works poort when the system response is actually counter intuitive to the ideology.

(95,337 posts)I mean that is totally unheard of in any economy to be that low. Pretty much if someone wants a job they are going to find one.
Sometimes I think I'd like to see Mark Dayton run for President. If he could do to the United States what he's done to Minnesota!

(12,444 posts)That's pure wealth redistribution but from the poor to the rich and it's not going to save the state's economy. In fact, it could make things worse by reducing consumption.

(15,728 posts)They will have to have school tax holidays so that the people can afford school supplies. Cities have to raise city and county taxes to make up for less state turn back funds. All this is happening because the states are not getting that much from the feds any more. Raising local taxes usually only raises the crime rate, which they are wanting to do for some reason.

Why not negate the previous tax cuts?
What!? And punish the rich?

Why worry about defunding universities when you are closing all of the public schools?
That man is a blight upon Kansas in particular and humanity in general.

Brownback doesn't care because he sold his soul long ago.

without any liberal counterbalance.
I think there must be some sort of glamor around the conservative ideology
that puts out a picture of the world that doesn't really exist, and the way
the ideology works makes people see what isn't there or else think it's right
around the corner if they're just -- conservative enough -- but enough is
never enough... and the people and the officials keep moving farther to the
right into cloud cuckooland.
I think Obama has fallen prey to this kind of magical thinking as well.
The average Republican voter hears tax cuts and starts jumping for joy. They don't understand that when they save $200 per year big corporations and the wealthy are saving millions. I think conservatives are basically cheapskates who want to pay zero taxes and yet get the benefits of living in our society.
