Bush: You need 'boots on the ground'

Source: The Hill

The United States will need combat troops on the ground to defeat the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS), former President George W. Bush suggested in a new interview.

"The president will have to make that determination," Bush said in an interview published Friday with the Israel Hayom newspaper when asked if ISIS could be defeated without ground troops.

"My position was that you need to have boots on the ground," he said.

Bush made the comments days after President Obama said he was sending more troops to Iraq. Obama has authorized sending up to 450 additional U.S. troops "to train, advise, and assist" local Iraqi forces battling ISIS, White House spokesman Josh Earnest said. They will not serve in combat.

...Come to that, we haven't recovered from the Civil War. All those vets might be dead, and all those who lost loved ones in that war also long gone...but there are those still waving the confederate flag and hating on Abraham Lincoln, and worshiping their grandparents for fighting against the Union.

It's hard to predict what wars will stick with us or keep coming back to bite us on the ass. Isis, after all, is all about lines drawn in the Middle East up by the European powers in WWI.

The one who originally put boots on the ground there, and likely played one of the largest roles in the current problem we're having. We should probably do the exact opposite of anything he thinks is a great idea.

But the boots need to be from a multinational force or a complete regional contingent. Not American soldiers in any form.

It's as if they think sending in the troops is the magic bullet that will magically wipe out ISIS for good. How does that work in their heads? How does it end? Endless stationing of US troops around Iraq again? Invading Syria when ISIS retreats back there?
