Navy Ship Christening For Gabrielle Giffords, Wounded In 2011 Shooting

MOBILE, Ala. – Former U.S. Rep. Gabrielle "Gabby" Giffords of Arizona is being recognized with a Navy ship named in her honor at a shipyard in Mobile, Alabama.

Giffords is set to attend the Saturday christening of the USS Gabrielle Giffords.

The 419-foot ship was built at the Austal shipyard in Mobile. It's the Navy's 10th littoral combat ship designed to operate in shallow waters near the coast.

Giffords was badly wounded in a 2011 shooting that left six dead and 13 injured in Tuscon. The Democrat left Congress and later founded an organization that supports gun control.

Austal officials say Giffords, her astronaut husband Mark Kelly and the wife of Vice President Joe Biden, Jill Biden, are expected to speak at the christening.

Gabrielle Giffords (LCS-10) is an Independence-class littoral combat ship of the United States Navy.

The littoral combat ship (LCS) is a class of relatively small surface vessels intended for operations in the littoral zone (close to shore) by the United States Navy. It was envisioned to be a networked, agile, stealthy surface combatant capable of defeating anti-access and asymmetric threats in the littorals.

and Gabby is entitled to it.
Obviously her and her husband approve of it, so what's your problem?

I merely asked for justification.

I happen to think it clanked off the rim given what happened to her.

Not sure how that would be interesting.

It's armed defensively. It's a multi purpose workhorse, particularly useful for amphibious landings and support. You might want to read up on them.

precisely because it is so lightly armed. Her combat systems can be summarized as 1) A defensive electronic warfare suite, 2) Some anti-missile machine guns, 3) One 57 mm cannon 4) mid-range SAMs, 5) A few Hellfire missiles, and 6) Helicopters and all capabilities associated with them.

That's actually not much. The USS Gabrielle Giffords and ships of the class would be effective at minesweeping, launching Navy SEALs, and engaging pirates/Iranian speedboats. Her anti-submarine capabilities are only as good as the helicopters (which need to be airborne). And the Hellfire missiles are kind of a joke, since they only have a range of five miles and would be ineffective against a heavily armored enemy combat vessel. Even the anti-aircraft weaponry would be quickly overwhelmed by a handful of aircraft launching supersonic missiles, assuming they could get a radar lock. Basically, the whole ship design banks on the stealth being pretty reliable, and/or the enemy being rather unsophisticated. Still, I wouldn't consider this ship much of a strategic asset.

Amphibious missions have always been the toughest tactical on the books. Depending on what the other guy's got and even with the best screen possible, can go crappy quickly.

I hope for the swabs' sakes it isn't one of those "looked good on paper" FUBARs

I do see the meaning in your comment, when it was a gun which would have killed her had she not worked desperately for such a long time to prevent it.

I definitely see your point.

Welcome to D.U., Camelback.
