Jeni's halts production after listeria again found in plant

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams has found listeria in its plant again and has halted production and closed retail shops for the second time since April, the company said Friday.
Listeria was discovered during routine swabbing that is part of the monitoring process, and the Columbus-based company is taking steps to figure out how it got into the plant, CEO John Lowe said in a statement on the company's website.
"We have a theory and are testing that theory," he said.
He said safety protocols worked as intended, and no ice cream was contaminated.

(34,661 posts)When they went through the same crap years ago. Same tanker truck hauled Caustic Soda and then picked up a load of Orange Juice and on to a load of liquid eggs. Can you say disaster, yes, transportation cleanliness rules allowed for the truck operator to do minimal rinse after each load. Everything is based upon the numbers of parts per million of residue left in the tanker after a rinse. Receipt for disaster. Schwans now use only dedicated tankers for egg products and butterfat. Zero cross contamination with complete wash and sanitation after each load with certification by the wash rack.

(34,661 posts)it could have or would have become a non issue if common sense was used. If you treat you employees like crap, well, you get crap in return. As for Schwans,it was a contract carrier who loved to cut corners, and you know how that worked out. Millions paid by a reinsurance company.
