Moldovans choose between Europe, Russia in local elections

CHISINAU, Moldova -- Moldovans are voting in local elections which are seen as a test of whether the country is committed to European integration or will move closer to Russia's orbit.
Sunday's elections come two days after pro-European Prime Minister Chiril Gaburici resigned after he was questioned about the authenticity of his high school diplomas and university degree.
Gaburici, a businessman who headed a minority government, had criticized a probe into the disappearance of $1.5 billion from three Moldovan banks before November elections.
Analysts say anger over missing money may be reflected in local elections, giving a boost to pro-Moscow parties against pro-European parties.

(3,982 posts)How does it help us if they are forced into a binary choice and then end up choosing to be close to Russia? Does that mean they can't also be close to Europe? Especially considering that they are midway to both countries.
This whole "choosing" thing is new. Their close neighbor Bulgaria did not have to go through this bullshit. People there like being in the EU but much of the population maintains close relations with Russia. They still use the cyrillic alphabet, etc.
These are artificial divisions more about geopolitics than the welfare of populations.
The criteria for EU integration *used* to be about stability and a certain level of work against corruption etc.
Maybe now that western Europe has it's own corruption problems they are less focused on having stable states and more on geopolitics???

But even with that, I would like to think in local elections people choose the person they want
And are not thing 'the west or Russia'
