John Hurt Is Battling Pancreatic Cancer

Source: Time

He is "optimistic" about his prognosis

John Hurt, the veteran British actor known for playing the Elephant Man as well as Mr. Ollivander in the Harry Potter films, has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer but is “optimistic” about his prognosis.

In a statement to PEOPLE, Hurt, 75, said: “I have always been open about the way in which I conduct my life and in that spirit I would like to make a statement. I have recently been diagnosed with early stage pancreatic cancer. I am undergoing treatment and am more than optimistic about a satisfactory outcome, as indeed is the medical team.”

He added: “I am continuing to focus on my professional commitments and will shortly be recording ‘Jeffrey Bernard Is Unwell’ (one of life’s small ironies!) for BBC Radio 4.”

Hurt, who was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in December, has been twice nominated for an Academy Award – for 1978’s Midnight Express, and for playing the title role of John Merrick in David Lynch’s 1980 biopic The Elephant Man.

I hope he pulls through anyway. He's been one of my favorite actors for as long as I can remember.

Get well soon, Sir John!

If he has a Stage 1 pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor treated with surgery, the survival rate is 61%. If it's exocrine pancreatic cancer, the best chance, even at Stage 1, is 14%. (Although these numbers are a decade out of date at least, and treatments have improved phenomenally in that time).

If he and his doctors are optimistic, I am too! Good luck, Mr. Hurt. I love your hat. I showed my husband (who is also currently undergoing treatment), and he said, "I don't think I could carry that off." Here's the tony, but much less dramatic, Italian cap I got him for summer:

I know someone who was diagnosed at stage 4 (mass in pancreas, "spots" on the liver) four months ago. He went down to Mayo for a second opinion after the first doctor practically gave him Last Rites.

Major chemo that he is tolerating fairly well, spots on liver are no longer visible on the MRI and the mass in the pancreas is smaller. Mayo did say this is terminal but they expect to be able to buy him time and pretty good time. They are hoping it might become more of a chronic condition. He has a long way to go before there are any real answers about survival and you never know what can go wrong but he's still living a normal life; has a great sense of humor and a really strong support network so we can hope it goes well.

If the cancer was found earlier, it may have been found while liking at or for something else. Pancreatic cancer is rarely caught early.

He played Kane, the guy who got facehugged and chestbursted in Alien.
He did it again for laughs in Spaceballs.
He played Winston Smith in 1984.
He played dictator Adam Sutler in V for Vendetta.
He played Professor "Broom" in Hellboy.
He played the Horned King in The Black Cauldron
He was the War Doctor in Doctor Who (the 50th Anniversary Special).
As mentioned, he was Ollivander in the Harry Potter series, and the Elephant Man.

He's died more times on screen than Sean Bean.

who has worked with Alpha Lipoic Acid and LDN for years as a chief expert for the FDA...but, he refused to work FOR the FDA! (because he doesn't want to see ALA, a natural substance, turned into a profit center for big pharma...over the years, the BUSH bunch banned or made very difficult getting imports from various places, but he found places like Italy where he can get the high quality stuff for IV use...)

I've seen people with pancreatic cancer there who I didn't know had been under treatment there for 5 or 6 years.

Dr. B. once told me that he wished Patrick Swayze had come here...instead, they go to the big hospital centers to die...

And Steve Jobs...he tried alternative things, yet missed the incredible track results of using LDN and ALA...Dr. B. has lectured all over the world....I met a lady from Scotland who came after hearing him there...he got her hooked up with a doctor there so she could go home and continue treatment after the initial intense protocol that lasts several weeks, AM and PM dosing...v

Very unfortunate that he locked the thread.

Check out the book HONEST MEDICINE...

It is not quackery....LDN...LOW DOSE Naltrexone is being researched like crazy.

Another thing that stunned me....I went in for an IV (it helped me get my eGFR into a less scary range) and met a young woman on the way out. I asked what she had been in for. She said she had MS, had come in in a wheelchair. She had no wheelchair and was
moving so well, I wouldn't have suspected...

The office also deals with correct diet along with supplements and specific dosages for each patient.

What a shame that Mineral Man, who has no knowledge, has decided that Dr. B is a "quack.
He had his Phd first and was researching a Rutgers for years. He picked up the MD degree because it gave him more flexibility for research. He has taken a lot of shit from TPTB but has integrity.

I'll vouch for him any day!

I think it's worst then lung cancer. I hope Mr Hurt doesn't suffer much. Before my boss got the diagnosis he was in a lot of pain and lost a lot of weight. At the end it was awful for him.

It says in the article that it's early stage, so lets hope it's early enough and he's strong enough to live through the treatments.

But maybe we'll be able to discover it early in the future, thanks to this young man.

On the bright side, people do survive pancreatic cancer. Case in point: Ruth Bader Ginsberg.

Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg was diagnosed with early stage pancreatic cancer in 2009. In that case, they said they caught while doing a "routine MRI." I remember thinking, "Who gets an MRI and calls it routine?" She must have way better health insurance than we do.

.... for hernia surgery. The thing was small enough they had trouble getting a biopsy - it took two trips to the endoscopy doc.

PNETS are relatively rare but they are finding more as imaging becomes better and is used more frequently.

RBG, is a lucky woman. The adenocarcinoma she has is the real killer. I couldn't believe she had the "bad one" so I had to look it up.
