N. Korea says it has been hit by worst drought in 100 years

By KIM TONG-HYUNG

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea says it has been hit by its worst drought in a century, resulting in extensive damage to agriculture.

The official Korean Central News Agency said the drought has caused about 30 percent of its rice paddies to dry up. Rice plants normally need to be partially submerged in water during the early summer.

"Water level of reservoirs stands at the lowest, while rivers and streams (are) getting dry," it said in a report Tuesday.

An official from South Korea's Unification Ministry, who asked not to be identified because of office rules, said precipitation in North Korea was abnormally low in May. Its production of rice and potatoes could decline by as much as 20 percent compared to average years if the shortage of rainfall extends to early July, he said. The official couldn't confirm North Korea's claim that it was experiencing its worst drought in a century.

6. Well, it must be because unless he's a DPRK insider, he'd have no way of knowing.

to the rest of the world. It could be a ploy for more money. Better than the nuclear threats though.

12. The lack of rain and in ability to manage their water supply is a big problem

I'm in South Korea about 26 km from the boarder and it has been fairly dry here the past few years. Monsoons have not brought as much rain as they did the first few years I lived here. It is a clear indication that climate change is affecting the whole world, but some areas worse than others.

This is something worth keeping an eye on given Kim Jong Un has changed many of his advisers and made it more difficult for people to leave the country. At the same time information is still getting into the country via balloons and smuggled products, so the people know what is going on outside North Korea.
