Thousands join mass climate change lobby outside UK parliament

Source: Guardian

Around 9,000 constituents take part in event to meet 250 MPs outside Westminster in what is thought to be biggest ever UK lobby on climate change

Beekeepers, surfers, nuns and children were among thousands of people who lined up outside the Houses of Parliament on Wednesday to speak to their MP about climate change.

Around 9,000 constituents took part in person, lobbying around 250 MPs according to the Climate Coalition, the group of charities, unions and faith groups that organised the event. London mayoral hopeful and Conservative MP, Zac Goldsmith, Caroline Lucas of the Green party and Labour leadership contender Jeremy Corbyn were among the MPs meeting with constituents.

The event came the day before Pope Francis is due to deliver a historic encyclical on climate change. Organisers said they hope it will build public pressure and political momentum in the final months before a landmark Paris conference on climate change in December.

<snip>

Called Speak Up for the Love Of, the mass lobby encouraged participants to share something that they love that will be threatened by climate change. MPs were transported to their constituents on bicycle taxis and grilled on a variety of climate issues from food security to conservation to sport.

More than 10,000 people urge their MP's to tackle climate change.

June 17 2015 - Thousands of people demanding action over climate change descended on London today for a mass lobby of UK politicians organised by The Climate Coalition.

<snip>

Together with the hundreds taking on-line action, the lobby was more than 10,000 strong, and by early afternoon the campaign hashtag #fortheloveof was trending at #2 on Twitter in UK.

<snip>

Those who attended included Double Olympic Gold Medallist and quadruple World Champion rower Andrew Triggs-Hodge who said: “Climate change threatens many aspects of human life – and changing water patterns is one of the main risks.

Catholic nun, Sr Karen Marguerite d’Artois OP said: “I’m here today because I care passionately about our world and what is happening to it. The earth is God’s creation which has been entrusted to us. We have an obligation to care for it.

Countdown to the Environment Encyclical: 2. The Climate Coalition

According to a new poll commissioned by Tearfund this week, Christians say environment and climate change problems are the main issues facing the world over the next ten years. One thing we do know is that climate change is going to be a major issue in Pope Francis' encyclical. However, he is probably going to say that these issues cannot be solved by Christians acting alone.

Today's event has been organised by The Climate Coalition, with sister organisations Stop Climate Chaos Cymru and Stop Climate Chaos Scotland. They have a combined supporter base of more than 100 member organisations. The event aims to get politicians to work together across party lines to support a global climate change agreement at Paris in December that will end carbon pollution from fossil fuels by the middle of the century. This is critical if we are to keep global temperature rises below 2 degrees. Also, to ensure that this September's Sustainable Development Goals reflect the need for urgent and ambitious action on climate change. At home, the Coalition wants an end to climate pollution from coal use in the UK, as a part of phasing out carbon from our power system. Making the investments in energy efficient homes, sustainable transport, and clean energy are needed to meet obligations under the UK Climate Change Act.

It should be underlined that this Climate Coalition includes development and environment agencies plus religious and others groups. It seems so right to be working together - CAFOD and Christian Aid alongside Friends of the Earth, RSPB and Greenpeace; Columban JPIC, Operation Noah, the Iona Community and Green Christian alongside Big Green Jewish, Edinburgh University Students Association and 350.org.

The wariness some Catholics feel about environmentalists is misplaced, I feel. In all my work with people from environmental groups over the years I have never heard any of them push population control or despise mainstream religions. I have felt inspired by their commitment to valuing and preserving the natural world and their witness of living simply. New alliances are to be welcomed.

Thousands march on Westminster in climate change protest

<snip>

All 650 of the UK’s MPs have received lobbying requests for meetings with their constituents. Rickshaws will carry MPs to face-to-face meetings with those attending the climate lobby.

<snip>

WWF-UK chief executive David Nussbaum said the event at Westminster would show MPs the popular feeling that not enough is being done by the UK.

<snip>

The march comes the day after the release of a new study from Michigan State University, which found that environmental activism does have a tangible impact on greenhouse gas emissions.
