Hate crime case: Man who sucker-punched Marine sentenced to prison

Source: Omaha World Herald

By Todd Cooper

A Kansas City, Missouri, man was sentenced Wednesday to 12 to 18 months in prison for sucker-punching a Marine who was defending his gay friend in downtown Omaha.

Judge Leigh Ann Retelsdorf sentenced Gregory Duncan to the term for punching a man in what a jury found was a gay hate crime.

A jury in February found that Duncan, 36, had sucker-punched Ryan Langenegger after one of Duncan’s friends called a man in drag a “faggot.”

Prosecutors said the only reason Langenegger was hit was that he was with Joshua Foo, who is gay, and Jacob Gellinger, who is gay and was dressed in drag that night.
