House Will Move Thursday On Clean Fast-Track Bill

Source: Huffington Post

WASHINGTON -- House Republicans plan to breathe new life into President Barack Obama's trade agenda on Thursday by bringing up a stand-alone bill to give the president expedited authority to speed major trade deals through Congress.

The new strategy from GOP leadership comes nearly a week after House Democrats handed the president a crippling defeat, stalling trade legislation in the chamber and leaving Obama and Republicans scrambling to find a way forward. Matt Sparks, a spokesman for House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), confirmed on Wednesday that GOP leadership's plan was to bring the new version of the so-called fast-track bill to the floor on Thursday.

Led by House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), Democrats on Friday killed legislation funding Trade Adjustment Assistance, which helps workers displaced by trade deals, in order to stall the fast-track bill and derail the president's agenda. Now, Republicans plan to bring stand-alone legislation that will grant Obama fast-track authority while excluding the controversial TAA funding.

The fast-track bill, also known as Trade Promotion Authority, already passed both the Senate and House, but its fate relied on the House passing TAA along with it. That didn't happen thanks to Democrats' revolt on Friday, forcing Republicans to find a new route. To move a clean fast-track bill, the House Rules Committee attached the legislation Wednesday evening to a firefighter and police retirement bill sent over by the Senate.

I think Obama and Boner are still begging for votes. You know that old saying, "it's not over until the fat lady sings."

it will remain to be seen if it can get through the Senate without TAA.

Looks like we have another six weeks to cook their goose. As much as I love President Obama, I want to see him lose this one.

they go and attach it to some bill for the retirement of fire fighters and police-------------no stand alone measure-----------none, just like they did on CAFTA, and the Korean Agreement, NAFTA---------nothing.
Because they aren't representatives there lobbyists, they buy there way into office by corruption and back door deals, there bought off buy back door deals of corruption, and they keep the political corruption just going just on different tread mill of deceit and deception-----------no scruples ------------none.

Because everyone knows its a ploy to use the government servants (state / federal against the non-government employees) -----------------well guess what-----------
I pay my hard earned dollars so that they, the government employees, can have a good life, because they deserve it, so they can retire-----------if this bill goes through or this "deal"-------- I can't live to pay for there retirement, or my retirement -----------these hypocrites -----------------my job is gone-----------my earned income is gone-------------outta hear-------------this is outrageous-------------------this is the issue---------------lost jobs-----------no matter how much assistance you give to anyone, its another burden just shifted to another scam bill -----------its about the lost jobs

Does this bother anyone else?

How can one even claim this is a "clean" bill if they are attaching it to something else?

but if the GOP House and GOP Senate passes it, they are doing
serious harm to their election chances

NAFTA remains very unpopular, people know their jobs are in China,
they know TPP will do even more

The GOP just doesn't get it. They live in the Wall Street Fox News Bubble

They are completely out of touch with popular opinion

GOP hopes remain on tarnishing Hillary, then tar and feathering her

How quaint. "Obama and Republicans scrambling" to act against the will of Obama's own party.

They pretended like the bill was dead so the protesters would go home. Nothing is ever over in politics!
