Rubio fundraiser canceled in Sarasota
Source: Sarasota Herald-Tribune
A fundraiser planned for Republican presidential candidate Marco Rubio tonight in Sarasota has been canceled, with backers saying they want to reschedule the event in the fall when more seasonal residents are in town.
Rubio, the U.S. Senator from Florida, was expected to appear at the fundraiser but his local supporters had trouble lining up enough high-dollar donors to make the visit worthwhile for the candidate.
An invite obtained by the Herald-Tribune showed a relatively small host committee for the event. It includes a handful of local officials and donors, including state Rep. Julio Gonzalez, county commissioners Charles Hines and Christine Robinson, and real estate investor Lemuel Sharp.

(449 posts)For many reasons, obviously. But the $$$ is a real and tangible factor in this election. The current situation, where the big donors are split between five or six viable establishment candidates, with most grassroots small donations going to the clown Tea Party candidates, is self-destructive for their party. HRC is going to be so far ahead in the fundraising game come Fall 2016, it's almost impossible to imagine a situation where she loses.

(17,064 posts)The west coast of Florida from Tampa Bay south. Tampa and St Petersburg are pretty liberal, with Democratic Mayors and Democratic majorities on the City Councils. The coast is increasingly conservative as you go south. Sarasota has a sizeable active Democratic population, but less than a majority. Southern Sarasota County (Venice, North Port) is Heavily republican. Father south, Punta Gorda, Fort Myers, and Naples, it is even more heavily republican. pRick Scott is from Naples.

(4 posts)They decided to wait until the rich republicans flock down to their second or third winter homes. I lived there 10 years and say Sarasota is at its best in the summer.
