Random House Moves Up Release of Ta-Nehisi Coates’s Book on Race Relations

Source: WSJ

Random House is moving up the publication date of journalist Ta-Nehisi Coates’s new book on race relations in response to the Charleston shooting and a wave of interest in the book spurred by comments from David Remnick, John Legend and others.

“Between the World and Me,” originally planned for Sept. 8, will now be released on July 14 by imprint Spiegel & Grau.

“We started getting massive requests from people” for advance copies, said Christopher Jackson, executive editor of Spiegel & Grau. “It spoke to this moment. We started to feel pregnant with this book. We had this book that so many people wanted.”

“I’ve been wondering who might fill the intellectual void that plagued me after James Baldwin died,” Ms. {Toni} Morrison wrote. “Clearly it is Ta-Nehisi Coates The language of Between the World and Me, like Coates’ journey, is visceral, eloquent and beautifully redemptive. And its examination of the hazards and hopes of black male life is as profound as it is revelatory. This is required reading.”

to discuss these issues. I've never been in a reading group. This might be the perfect way to do it. Have a reading group and start with this book.

and James Baldwin. A hell of an equation. Thinking of The Fire Next Time. For my money, Baldwin was among the finest American polemicists in the last half of the 20th Century. And there was real competition, back then.

He is an excellent writer and I just found out that his father founded and runs BCP (Black Classic Press). I have 2 tall bookcases with many important works by black authors that had been out of print, that I ordered from BCP.

and another AWP (Africa World Press) have been excellent resources for classic black historical tomes as well as literature... particularly for items that were out of print.

Keep sharing good books & articles. Regarding Between the World and Me, amazon says: A bold and personal literary exploration of America’s racial history by “the single best writer on the subject of race in the United States” (The New York Observer).
