Nigerian Islamic Court Sentences 10 to Death for Blasphemy

Source: Bloomberg

A Nigerian Islamic Shariah court sentenced 10 men, including a Muslim cleric, to death for blasphemy at a closed hearing on Thursday in the northern city of Kano.

A date for the executions hasn’t been set and four other accused people were released, Kano High Court spokesman Baba Jibo Ibrahim said by phone on Friday.

The Tijjaniya cleric was arrested in May after suggesting the sect’s leader Sheikh Ibrahim Inyaas was more powerful than the Prophet Muhammad. The sentencing was done in secret due to saftey concerns after the court was attacked last month, Ibrahim said.

The offence, committed in early June, triggered protest in Kano.

The demonstration was however promptly quelled by law enforcement agents. The court where the trial began was burnt down prompting the authorities to assign the case to another court.
...
The statement acknowledged that some Muslim faithful in Kano threatened violence if the accused were set free.
...
Already, news of the judgment has sparked jubilation by a section of Kano residents.

anything remotely like this?

Pointing out that Islam currently is off on its own as a religion with its combination of rigid misogyny homophobia and strict theocracy is not bigotry, it is a simple fact.

When you kill people for their beliefs, I think you can call that implementation of the religion a death cult.

This is an official part of state law.

A statement by the State Sharia Court of Appeal, signed by a man named Nasiru, said the nine persons were found guilty under section 110 and section 382b of the Sharia Penal Court law year 2000.

It's just like saying "some parts of the USA have the death penalty", because some states do, while some don't.

and then a completely separate sharia law based system for the Hausa majority regions. Nigeria has always been an unstable mix of three large ethnic regions, muslim Hausa in the north, Yuroba in the west-middle, and Igbo in the south, with many other smaller ethnic groups as well. Animist and Christian religions are pervasive everywhere except the northern regions. Several decades ago the muslim regions demanded and got judicial independence from the rest of Nigeria. It is not the same as "this state has the death penalty and this state doesn't". All of our states must comply with the rules set by the federal constitution, there is one over-arching judicial system. With the exception of Louisiana all of our states base their laws on British Common Law, but even Louisiana has to comply completely with the constitution. The northern regions of Nigeria are off on their own with the sharia courts and their sharia legal system and it is almost, if not completely separate from the rest of Nigeria.

It's more a part of control
North Korea is officially an atheist state.
But saying anything remotely negative about the leader is a death sentence.
So, it's a kind of blasphemy law
In PDK schools, they tell 1st graders to close their eyes and pray to God for candy then tell them to open them and there is no candy. Then they tell them to pray to the Leader and the teacher places candy on a desk for them to take.
It is a crime to sit on anything with a picture of Kim Jong-un on it, even if it's a newspaper article and you couldn't see the picture (This law was on the books for Jong-il and Il-sung as well)

What I said is that currently Islam is off on its own compared to other religions, none of which are setting up religious courts that kill adulterers, homosexuals, blasphemers etc. Not that I think there aren't other religions that would like to do that, I think that there are, but the secularization of European and Asian societies has subdued the worst impulses of those religions.

and the whole world is having to bend over backwards to accommodate it.

and we seem to accept that the massacres are a small sacrifice to appease them.

If they're so righteous, why do they have to hide their proceedings?!?

Oh yeah, because they really ARE a death cult and apparently there are people unhappy living under their edicts.

I wish they'd go after those found-money email scammers, too. Just a couple of beheadings might help, especially if they did it on TV.

Just kidding, just kidding.
