Texas AG: 'No Court, No Law, No Rule' Will Change Definition Of Marriage
Source: TPM
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton on Friday declared that nothing will change the definition of marriage, despite the Supreme Court's ruling that same-sex couples in the U.S. have the right to marry.
"Todays ruling by five Justices of the U.S. Supreme Court marks a radical departure from countless generations of societal law and tradition. The impact of this opinion on our society and the familial fabric of our nation will be profound. Far from a victory for anyone, this is instead a dilution of marriage as a societal institution," Paxton said in a statement.
"But no court, no law, no rule, and no words will change the simple truth that marriage is the union of one man and one woman. Nothing will change the importance of a mother and a father to the raising of a child. And nothing will change our collective resolve that all Americans should be able to exercise their faith in their daily lives without infringement and harassment," he continued.
On Thursday Paxton told county clerks to wait for his directive following the Supreme Court ruling, indicating that he was considering defying a ruling in favor of same-sex marriage.
"To be clear the law in the state of Texas is that marriage is one man and one woman, and the position of this office is that the United States Constitution clearly does not speak to any right to marriage other than one man and one woman and that the First Amendment clearly protects religious liberty and the right to believe in traditional marriage without facing discrimination," he said in a statement, according to the Texas Tribune. But on Friday, Paxton said in the headline of his statement that the state would be "following high courts flawed ruling."

(7,570 posts)That's what provides a lot of humor and irony in his stories. He exercises the (relatively) absolute authority that's been legally granted to him, but no more. Judge Dredd won't arrest and sentence you for something that's not technically illegal.
So please don't compare this clown to Judge Dredd. In Megacity One, Judge Dredd would be arresting and sentencing HIM.

I anyone is being harassed it's gay people. They are not the ones pointing fingers and standing in judgment of other people's lifestyles.

Yeah, neither do I.
Christianity has been pulling that persecution complex thing to their great advantage political and economic for two millennia now.
They actually see other human beings being afforded their natural rights under the law as somehow keeping them from exercising the right to religious freedom.
Because they can't say what they really want to...they want to hide behind their faith and be the bigots they are.

(30,250 posts)I'm talking about people like Bristol Palin, for example. Always pointing fingers and judging others while failing at precisely what they preach. It annoys me even more that they proclaim to be Christians and they use him as a shield for their bigotry and prejudice. Christ was about love, not hate. So no, they don't follow Jesus' teachings.

(1,576 posts)Why it is that no one in the media or on the progressive side does not out-and-out ask what they mean by the free exercise of their religion?
What they ARE saying is that the free exercise of their religion is the right to denigrate, debase, and outright discriminate LEGALLY against those they do not approve of.
I firmly believe that should some one or some other group claim that same right, the howling and gnashing of their collective teeth could be heard for many a mile with no amplification whatsoever.
Just my 2 cents worth

(776 posts)Harris Co. (Houston), Travis Co. (Austin), Bexar Co. (San Antonio) & Dallas Co have all started issuing licenses.
Houston Mayor Annise Parker, the first openly gay leader of a major American city, cheered the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling ensuring the legality of same-sex marriage nationwide Friday morning.
"At last! What a joyous, historic day for America, the LGBT community, individual families, the institution of marriage and the fight for equality," the mayor said in a prepared statement. "I used to think that I would not see this day in my lifetime. In recent years, however, it's been clear that personal hearts and minds, and the courts, were headed in this direction."
"Marriage is about love, commitment, and family," she continued. "Couples who make that commitment deserve to be respected under law, with the full legal protections that accompany a marriage license. Finally, they are!"
Parker and her partner of more than two decades, local accountant Kathy Hubbard, were married in January 2014 in California.

(60,010 posts)If you are non-religious, and/or gay, you cannot marry in our county, because civil marriages by Probate Court will no longer be done.
You CAN get a marriage license still, but have to go to one of the cities to find a judge who will marry you,
or one of the few religious folks who will.
Not ever county judge in Ala. is refusing, but some are, in the more conservative areas.

(34,136 posts)Back when some counties in Florida were refusing to perform any marriages after it was legalized here, Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum invited people to come to Tallahassee to be married (http://miamiherald.typepad.com/nakedpolitics/2015/01/tallahassee-mayor-andrew-gillum-to-north-fla-gay-couples-get-married-here.html). There is a three day waiting period (unless you take some marriage course - which can be done online and which saves you $32.50 off the cost of your license (https://www.google.com/search?q=Florida+pre-marital+course&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8)), but people could stop by Tallahassee, get their license, visit the beach, then get married and go home. Have the honeymoon BEFORE the wedding!
Oh - Florida allows more categories of people to make it legal - my husband and I were married by a notary public. No preacher, no judge, just a simple NP.

(16,975 posts)Liberals want all people to have access to rights. If you don't want or need a right, no liberal is going to force you to use your rights. On the other hand, conservatives try to convince you that you don't need rights, and they shove all of their beliefs down your throat, whether you want or need the belief.
I'm really glad that people who love each other can have the legal recognition and social traditions that people in love want to share. In my belief system, God is smiling
