Abbott says state employees may withhold benefits from same sex couples
Source: Houston Chronicle
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott opened the door for state employees to withhold benefits from same-sex couples Friday, hours after the Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage nationwide.
In a letter released Thursday afternoon, Abbott ordered heads of state agencies to prioritize religious freedom, writing that no adverse action should be taken against a state official "on account of the person's act or refusal to act that is substantially motivated by sincere religious belief."
"This order applies to any agency decision, including but not limited to granting or denying benefits, managing agency employees, entering or enforcing agency contracts, licensing and permitting decisions, or enforcing state laws and regulations," Abbott wrote.
Earlier this month, the governor signed into law the "Pastor Protection Act," which exempts private citizens from performing marriages that would cause them to "violate a sincerely held religious belief.

(26,299 posts)because you can just bet that there will be alot of lawsuits and I suspect the state will be losing most of them especially if a state official while on the job discriminates against someone because of the governors order.

They are going to fight this tooth and nail, kicking and biting, every damned inch of the way. I hope the courts come down on them HARD for this kind of nonsense.

(45,984 posts)The "Pastor Protection Act" is perfectly OK with me, but giving an individual state employee the right to deny benefits to people based on sexual orientation is absurd. I have no doubt that Governor Abbott is homophobic, and that his bigotry is based on sincerely held Christian beliefs. However, he is the governor of all the people in his state and he has no right to enforce the law for the benefit of some and not for others. Yet that is exactly what his order to the heads of state agencies does.
