Bernie Sanders’s Early Online Haul: $8.3 Million

Source: NY Times

Derek Willis

The enthusiastic crowds that have been greeting Bernie Sanders on the campaign trail have been matched by online donor excitement.

Mr. Sanders, the socialist Vermont senator running for the Democratic presidential nomination, has raised at least $8.3 million online through June 17, according to Federal Election Commission records. His campaign won’t file its initial report until July 15, but filings by ActBlue, the online fund-raising committee that serves as a conduit for Democratic campaigns, show that Mr. Sanders has brought in more money in May and the first half of June than any other Democratic candidate using ActBlue.

It’s likely that Mr. Sanders will report more than $9 million raised as of June 30, the deadline for midyear F.E.C. reports. That amount is larger than any Republican not named Mitt Romney raised in the first half of 2011.

His total is greater than that of Martin O’Malley, the former Maryland governor who also uses ActBlue and has collected more than $331,000 in his first month of online fund-raising. But Mr. Sanders’s online success is likely to be eclipsed in the first set of filings by Hillary Rodham Clinton, who has a larger network of donors and more time to raise money. (ActBlue is not Mrs. Clinton’s primary online fund-raising vehicle; she has received at least $43,000 through ActBlue users between April 20 and June 17).

A handful of women's events alone brought in millions.

It's a different story. All the more proof that she is tied to the 1%.

...as for being a slave for big money, are you prepared to lose by having your candidate be unable to compete with his Republican opponent, as long as you can stand by your anti-big money principles?

Maybe they aren't this time around. If you want to keep putting out the misnomer that Bernie Sanders would lose the general election if nominated that's fine. Remember the same argument was used by Hillary Clinton and her supporters in 2008. How did that work out?

...and was happy to come to my neck of the woods for fundraisers with 1%ers.

Here's a simple question: Does Sanders believe so strongly in this issues that he'll sign on for public campaign funds, and accept the significant limitations that will result when the Republicans don't?

His campaign would benefit more from many smaller donors like myself and others who are not wealthy making several donations over the course of the election cycle. That doesn't mean he will accept donations from the 1%ers. Personally I think it is morally wrong to assume money can buy elections despite the Citizen's United decision. If you think it does, then you agree with four very conservative Supreme Court justices.

DU and personal Act Blue pages are a marginal share of contributions, most of which will be small dollar for every candidate.

From the article:

"One question is whether this initial flood of donations represents the high-water mark or can be sustained."

Of course it can be sustained! The more places Bernie travels and the more people who come out to hear him, the more supporters and donations he'll gather. Jerk!

Hillary is in the billion dollar range. Still, it's good that Bernie is getting his message out. He's playing a long game, just like Norman Thomas did. If you don't know who Norman Thomas was, I suggest you look him up.

Thankfully we have the privilege to be able to have signed on for a recurring monthly donation for the next twelve months.

I am working hard today to scrape up enough cash to keep my checking account from being overdrawn when my yard guy posted this month's and my post dated next month's check at the same time this morning.

But I have $2.00 sitting in PayPal. I just gave it to Sanders. We need him to win, and every tiny little bit helps.
