SAN JOSE -- Hours away from walking off the job, members of Santa Clara County's largest employee union reached a last-minute deal Tuesday morning with county officials to avoid a strike.
With a 6 a.m. strike deadline looming, Santa Clara County Supervisor Dave Cortese and the workers' union both issued tweets on Tuesday at about 4:30 a.m. stating a tentative deal has been reached.
The agreement, a four-year deal, must be voted on by union members and approved by the County Board of Supervisors.
"We are pleased that after negotiating through much of the night, the County and SEIU were able to reach a tentative agreement," County Executive Jeffrey Smith said in a statement. "Although the agreement has to be ratified by its members, the strike has been averted and residents in Santa Clara County will be able to access all County services today and during the weeks ahead."
