Obama Administration rebuffs D.C.’s efforts to bring back the Redskins

Source: Washington Post

Efforts to lure the Washington Redskins back to the District have come up against a potentially insurmountable challenge: the Obama Administration’s objections to the team’s name.

Interior Secretary Sally Jewell told D.C. Mayor Muriel E. Bowser this spring that the National Park Service, which owns the land beneath Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium, was unlikely to accommodate construction of a new stadium for the Redskins unless the team changes its name.

Jewell oversees both national park land and America’s trust and treaty relationships with Native American tribes.

Her decision not to extend the District’s lease of the RFK land badly hinders Mayor Bowser’s bid to return the Redskins to D.C. — and boosts efforts to lure the team across the Potomac to Northern Virginia.

You would think he would grab the opportunity to look like a good guy, make a big deal of finding a new name, and so on. What can you say about a guy who turns down a wonderful PR opportunity and clings to bigotry?

They could serve all sorts of potato-based foods to the crowd, baked, with sour creme/chives; curly fries, steak fries, tater tots shaped like little footballs....why not?

Maybe it would usher in an era of naming teams after food--the Hartford Rutabagas, the Burlington Cucumbers...it might be fun!

Either one can keep the Cowboys rivalry sensible (though is a 4-12 team really a "rival" in any real sense with a 12-4 team?) And it's not like eagles and giants have some sort of mascot-based rivalry...

What the hell--we have a baseball and football Giants already, so why not a Braves, too? They'd even get to keep the color scheme and possibly the logo.

The Redskins were the Boston Braves until they moved to Fenway and became the Redskins to tie in with the Red Sox.

Whether that agreement to not go back to the original name is still in effect, I have no idea.

The Late Jack Kent Cooke built the current Redskins Stadium with his own money back in 1996. He couldn't work out a deal with Sharon Pratt Dixon who was the Mayor at the time so he bought land in Md and built the stadium there. Dan Snyder is a troglodyte and i wouldn't use public financing for a new stadium regardless of what the name of the team is.

Before granting Dan Snyder ANYTHING. Why NoVA would tolerate the intolerable, esp when DC would not, is beyond me.
