New Cases of Ebola Put an End to Liberia’s Status as Virus-Free
Source: NY Times
More than a month after Liberia was declared free of Ebola, at least two new cases have emerged, the first discovered when the body of a 17-year-old boy tested positive for the virus, officials said Tuesday.
The World Health Organization declared Liberia Ebola-free on May 9, a landmark moment in the country, which has suffered more deaths from the epidemic than any other.

Horrible news, and I suspect that they will need additional help to gear back up quickly. They were shutting down much of the infrastructure.
It's a lot easier to stop these outbreaks while they are small.

What's so awful about this is that Liberia's success provided a promise of hope to Guinea and Sierra Leone.
I was shocked. Also the 17 year-old who died was apparently selling used clothes in a market, so this raises issues about other non-detected cases.
Also after falling ill some clinic is supposed to have diagnosed him as having malaria. Well, Ebola symptoms are pretty generic, but this suggests that surveillance precautions were dropped far too soon. The boy's father is the one who contacted the burial team. This is disturbing.

(8,303 posts)The three confirmed cases dug up a dead dog and ate it, and they think that's how they were exposed:

There were previously studies done showing dogs had been exposed in Ebola areas:

So the guess is that the dog ate an infected animal.
While not good, this is far preferable to some other possibilities.

(8,303 posts)I think if we can get a good one that the world can develop the funding to administer it.
We're at the point at which Ebola may not go away, and sooner or later, it is likely to go global. The nightmare scenario is that it infiltrates India.
If there are animal vectors now in Liberia and the surrounding area, the world needs to cough up the money for a testing program to find them and deal with the situation.
