Hillary Clinton ridiculed David Camerons wacky attempt to torpedo the Lisbon Treaty while he was Opposition leader, newly released emails reveal. Mr Camerons high-handed attempt to sink the European treaty had seriously damaged his relationship with Angela Merkel, the German chancellor, before he even entered office, Mrs Clinton was told by a close aide. Mrs Clinton said she hoped the incident would boost support for Tony Blair as he campaigned for the European presidency.
In October 2009, Mr Cameron attempted to halt the treaty which gave the EU a president, a diplomatic service and which stripped countries of their veto in a swathe of areas by writing to Vaclav Klaus, the Czech leader, urging him not to sign.
In a memo to Mrs Clinton, Sidney Blumenthal, one of her closest aides, wrote: Without passing 'Go, David Cameron has seriously damaged his relations with the European leaders. Sending a letter to Czech leader Vaclay Klaus [sic] encouraging him not to sign the Lisbon Treaty, as though Cameron were already Prime Minister, he has offended Sarkozy, Merkel and Zapatero [the Spanish premier].
Mrs Clinton replied: That is so revealing and wacky but it perhaps leaves a very small opening for Tony.
