(57,446 posts)I was on a commuter bus going past the L'Enfant Plaza Metro stop at 7:52. Two Metro Transit police SUVs were responding with lights and siren to that stop. A few minutes later, I saw an unmarked red Tahoe (or equivalent) headed east on Pennsylvania Avenue past the East Building of the National Gallery of Art, also with lights and siren.

Since about 7:30, the Navy Yard has been on lockdown. There are claims of an active shooter.
Parts of South Capitol Street (from M to I) and 11th Street SE are closed. Expect closures to expand.
Expect total hassles if you have to get to downtown DC, area military bases, etc.
More as it is reported.

(7,153 posts)Hopefully it's some idiot claiming a shot was fired in order to get off early for the holiday.

Several channels are interviewing personnel removed by police from the building.

(7,153 posts)There was ONE known report of "sounds like gunfire". Probably some truck or construction noise.
Given the ""We must be vigilant for the 4th" efforts, panic followed the initial reports of gunfire noise.
I have heard from Repugs everything from "A drill for Obama" to "The Feds were almost all on holiday, this was to scare the contractors".
