Chambers criticizes (Gov) Ricketts (R-NE) for donating $100,000 to death penalty effort

LINCOLN — Gov. Pete Ricketts came under fire by State Sen. Ernie Chambers on Wednesday for donating $100,000 to an effort to restore Nebraska’s death penalty.

Chambers, the state’s leading opponent of capital punishment, said it was inappropriate for the Republican governor to fund the effort after failing to convince the Nebraska Legislature to retain capital punishment.

“He thinks that his money is going to purchase what he can’t get done with his political savvy,” said Chambers, an independent.

Ricketts said Wednesday that there was nothing wrong with his funding of the initiative.

Good to know his pro-life position doesn't include the death penalty or expanding Medicare.

and believes in the sanctity of life and all of the other rhetoric you typically hear from politicians of Ricketts' ilk.

Our political, legal and judicial systems are such a joke. Almost banana republic status. They no longer determine innocence or guilt, right or wrong, justice or injustice. They are a forum to display whose attorney or team of attorneys do the better job of manipulating the judge, jury and media. How many death row convictions have be seen overturned recently due to DNA evidence after the victim sat in prison for decades? How many grand larcenists from Wall Street and elsewhere continue to walk free because they can afford the high-dollar, slicker-talking team of attorneys? It's all over the place, all of the time.
