Kenya protesters warn Obama not to bring up gay rights in visit
Source: AGENCE FRANCE-PRESSE
Kenyan anti-gay protesters marched in Nairobi Monday warning US President Barack Obama not to speak about gay rights when he visits the country of his ancestors later this month.
We do not want Obama and Obama, we do not want Michelle and Michelle, they chanted. We want Obama and Michelle and we want a child!
It is important for us as Kenyans to know that the US is not God, and thus we cannot follow them blindly, said protest organiser and evangelical Christian pastor Bishop Mark Kariuki.
Kariuki said Obama was welcome to visit his fathers home but should not talk about the gay issue. The demonstration drew around 100 people, wearing T-shirts and waving posters with the slogan Protect The Family.

Bigotry and stupidity tend to go together.

(3,205 posts)Same sex marriage has been legal in South Africa since 2006, and South Africa bans all anti-gay discrimination. Mozambique just decriminalized homosexual activity this year making it one of the 21 African countries (out of 56) that no longer punish gay behavior.
It's amazing to see even those numbers given how much effort the fundy christians and muslims have put into spreading bigotry and hatred.

(6,699 posts)I had no idea. With the "selective news" we get here in this country, I was beginning to assume ALL of Africa was bat-shit crazy when it came to homosexuality. Glad to hear it's not the case.

(2,012 posts)are not ignorant. For centuries they have practiced traditional, indigenous, Christian, Islam, and many other faiths. Freedom of religion is written into their democracy, but, just as in the West, most of the religions have been patriarchal and violent, and taught tribal, gender, and ethnic discrimination.
We need to remember that the "enlightened" nations took many of these terrible practices to Africa and told the people that we knew what was best for them.
It has taken a long time for us to come this far in human rights; most of western history is white superiority, colonialism, and discrimination. Pentecostal and fundamental Protestants from the US and other nations are still promoting bigotry in Africa.
I hope our President will not preach, but our brothers and sisters in Kenya will see in him that the US really does believe in equality.
