Hillary Clinton hails South Carolina vote to take down Confederate flag
Source: Washington TIMES
By David Sherfinski - The Washington Times - Thursday, July 9, 2015
Former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton released a statement on the South Carolina legislatures vote to remove the Confederate flag from statehouse grounds saying that removing the symbol of our nations racist past is a step forward but that unfinished business remains on confronting inequalities in the country.
Removing this symbol of our nations racist past is an important step towards equality and civil rights in America, Mrs. Clinton, the 2016 Democratic president frontrunner, said in a statement Thursday.
The South Carolina House voted early Thursday on a measure to remove the flag, sending it to Gov. Nikki Haley, who was expected to sign the measure into law. The debate over the Confederate flag has received renewed attention in the wake of the recent fatal shootings at Emanuel AME Church in Charleston.
The flag may soon no longer fly at the State Capitol, but there is still unfinished business in confronting and acting on the inequalities that still exist in our country, Mrs. Clinton said. We cant hide from the hard truths about race and justice. We must do everything in our power to have the courage to name them and change them.

Yes, this is from the Washington TIMES! I'll change the reference once another news source is available with Clinton's statement.
Again:

Good for her!

(15,384 posts)I keep thinking back to this one Southern Bubba (not all Southerners are Bubbas, but this guy was a Bubba) in one of the documentaries made by Nancy Pelosi's daughter where he was literally sobbing over what then only looked like the very real possibility that Obama was going to win the 2008 election because according to him white men just couldn't have anything to themselves anymore, and I wonder if he's now basically been in a fetal position for the last several weeks.

(39,215 posts)stupid flag and a day when it was supposed to be wear the flag day.
I called her on it - telling her that if she wanted to celebrate someone from the civil war she should celebrate the Union soldiers from our family. She came back with "I think they should be able to fly it as long as it is not on government grounds." Told her that was all anyone was asking. And asked if she understood what that rag meant to her aunts - both of us have black children and grandchildren. She did not answer.
The real problem is that she lives in Iowa and that flag has no history whatsoever in Iowa except as an enemy flag. Ignorance is one of the big problems.

(67,782 posts).....239 year history. Early on in the civil war the existence of the United States was in serious danger.
Had the war ended the way it was going in the beginning our history would have been totally different, as would world history.
Thankfully the US turned the tide of the war and was successful.

(11,990 posts)Seriously, has HRC taken a single controversial position on anything yet? Has she said anything on any topic of substance that isn't designed to avoid alienating anyone? I guess maybe that's a smart strategy, to try not to turn off any potential voter... I suppose that approach makes sense for a front-runner, first do no harm. But I think that's why she generates so little enthuiasm, too (apart from those who are simply excited by the prospect of a female president). But maybe all she needs to win is to not screw up, so playing it safe is the way to go. But that's why Sanders has his shot... he has the freedom to be bold because he has nothing to lose.

(67,782 posts)..."so little enthusiasm"?
We're talking about the potential leader of our country, not the Super Bowl.
Unfortunately too many people look at elections as sporting events. They're much more important.
thesquanderer
(11,990 posts)Tons of people will vote for her, no doubt. But people vote for people they're not very enthusiastic about all the time. Besides the people excited about the possibilty of a female president (who would be among those likely to be genuinely enthusiastic), she will also get lots of primary votes from people who think she has the best chance of winning the general, or feel that she's a good "safe" choice, or feel she's got the best foreign policy experience, and so forth.; and assuming she's the nominee, she'll get lots of votes in the national because people will prefer her to the Republican candidate. But that doesn't mean all those people are necessarily enthusiastic about the choice. For enthusiasm, look at the turnouts, for example...
Now as to whether enthusiasm is important (as you say, it's not a sporting event), well that's a different issue.

(11,990 posts)It basically says the same thing I said. Clinton leads the polls and will probably win, but not because she has a lot of enthuiasm... rather because she has the establishment behind her. Sanders has much more enthuastic support among his followers than Hillary has among hers. But of course that doesn't mean he's likely to win.

(67,782 posts)...or what will happen.
I've likened the Bernie Surge to the following Howard Dean got back in 2004. He generated a lot of interest and a big following, but more for the "novelty" of his campaign than the bottom-line substance. When it came to actually voting for him in primaries, people wound up going for Kerry, the more sensible and level-headed candidate.

(2,157 posts)She could have kept quiet on the issue for fear of speaking out will most certainly cost her some votes in the South not only in the Democratic Primary, but in the General Election as well.
Mainly in states like Arkansas where she absolutely has a chance of winning.
However what I Respect about Hillary, among other things is that she speaks truth to her values, even if it may cost her some votes.
thesquanderer
(11,990 posts)I assumed there was nothing at all controversial or risky in her position, but you're right, that could be my own regional bias, and it might not play so well everywhere. OTOH, I don't think any other Democratic candidate is going to be any easier on the confederate flag. I don't see the position costing her anything in the primaries, but not so sure about the general.

(31,235 posts)knows the pain this relic has caused for so many of us. Contrary to assertions by others that it's just name recognition, she has actually been listening. Something her opponents haven't quite grasped yet. This is why she continues to pull 80%+ support from minorities. Nice to see it in print, but we already knew where she stood on the issue.
