Trump leads GOP presidential field in new national poll
Source: The Hill
Media coverage of Donald Trump's controverisal immigration remarks have lifted the GOP presidential candidate to the top of the Republican field, according to a new Economist/YouGov poll.
Trump was the preferred GOP nominee for president for 15 percent of respondents 4 points ahead of former Gov. Jeb Bush (Fla.) and Sen. Rand Paul (Ky.), who were tied for second place.
Gov. Scott Walker (Wis.), Sen. Marco Rubio (Fla.) and former Gov. Mike Huckabee (Ark.) shared the third spot with 9 percent each.
In addition to being the first choice for the majority of likely voters who participated in the poll, Trump was also the primary second choice for those who preferred another candidate as their nominee.

Fox News built a f**ked-up Frankenstein, dumb, angry and divorced from facts. Now Donald Trump will devour them
Fox News and the conservative media-industrial complex have created a Frankenstein. His name is Donald Trump, and his political success is now a huge problem for the Republican Party. In so many ways, Trumps political existence was inevitable. For years, Fox News and the conservative talk radio machine have played to the populist Tea Party id: fomenting fear, demonizing immigrants, and enabling every nativist anxiety imaginable. Now theyre paying the price.
Donald Trump is practically a mirror image of the Fox News psyche. Most of his speeches consist of repackaged stupidities plucked right out of the conservative mediascape. Its kind of brilliant, really. Trump knows his audience, and he beams back at them every idiotic thing they want to hear. Which, of course, is exactly what Fox News does.

"This how fucked up the GOP has become". I wish them all well in November 2016. And this is the best they can come up with?

(4,473 posts)The Presidency tends, year by year, to go to such men. As democracy is perfected, the office represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. We move toward a lofty ideal. On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last, and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron.
He was referring to Warren Harding when he wrote, and his words could apply to George W Bush, but they also explain the popularity of Donald Trump among conservatives.

Trump leads by 4 points over Jeb and Ron Paul, by 5 points over Walker, Rubio, Huckabee. By 8 over Christie and 9 over Carson.
The margin of error in the poll is 4.7%.
And since Trump managed to get 15%, that's from 10% to 20%.
This is all name recognition at this point, anyway, coupled with a huge field. Even with the "preference voting" paradigm that the poll tries to use (whatever the current name for that voting method is) it's pretty pointless.

What would be great though he might be enticed to run third party if the GOP rejects him.

the Democrats wanted to run against Reagan in 1980

(582 posts)the statement that "If <insert your favorite candidates name here> is not nominated, then I will vote for the nominee of course..That is what I am saying. If Trump were a Dem,and was the nominated candidate, then there would be those who would suggest that anyone who would not vote for him must not be a real Dem.(or at least that would be the inference).
I (and many others) feel like we won't get a decent candidate.I think the fix is in.We will be expected to vote for the Corporatist and be happy about it.

(30 posts)Obviously I'd never vote for him to begin with, but I sometimes try to see things from the perspective of those I disagree with, which in this case would be a Trump-supporter. What could such people POSSIBLY see in this man? Trumps' message is basically:
1. I'm rich, so I'm far more important than YOU'LL ever be.
2. I REALLY hate non-whites.
3. Actually I hate whites too.
4. Forget I said 1-3, I'm rich and you're not, and I HATE YOU.
THAT is Trump's message. WHO would support him??? And WHHHHHHHYYYYYY???

On the other hand, they interviewed a couple other people. One bystander said, "This guy is an idiot." A Maricopa County official said Trump is trying to divide us. She was well-spoken and articulate.
Trump was strutting around and I think he may have hugged someone from a shooting. I didn't catch from where.
This was a lengthy story. I was surprised they gave him this much time.
