The Obama Administration Is Delaying Obamacare's Menu-Labeling Rules
Source: National Journal
Chain restaurants will have an extra year to comply with the menu-labeling rules created by the Affordable Care Act, the Obama administration announced Thursday.
The Food and Drug Administration said that compliance with the rule, which mandates that restaurants with 20 or more locations post calorie information on in-store menu boards or face civil and criminal penalties, will be required on December 1, 2016pushed back from December 1, 2015.
The restaurant industry, particularly major pizza chains, have been opposed to the rule. The American Pizza Community previously told National Journal that it supported a one-year delay while it is also seeking broader changes to the mandate. A House bill, which has not yet had a committee hearing, would allow pizza chains to post their calorie information online instead of in their stores.
Public-health advocates support the menu-label provision, arguing that evidence suggests it would lead to restaurants producing healthier food. Some had expected a delay, though, after the pushback from the industry.

(14,449 posts)I was in Denny's last night and they have it on their menus. For me I always pick from what I want to eat and don't count calories but for those that do it is a benefit. I just look at the calorie count and think another hour on the treadmill tomorrow. At 46, I still work out a lot but also need calories to burn.

What a business concept! Chains are not in the business to be health food stores. People can go to health food stores for that. The idea that people don't know what they are eating is absurd. They do know and that is why they are paying to do it. It is a meaningless nannny-state rule.

(12,655 posts)then they should share. obesity is about to surpass smoking as the #1 preventable killer of people in this country. this generation will be the first one to live less of a lifespan than their parents. in addition, obesity related disease costs the u.s. about $147 billion per year.
if we want to even dream about single payer, we have to do more about obesity. requiring businesses to be honest about their products is not inappropriate.

(32,025 posts)They don't care about the calories or anything else. Obesity is not some conspiracy by companies. It is a refusal to eat in moderation and laziness.

(12,655 posts)but some people really struggle with weight and want to lose, and more info when eating out will empower them to make healthier choices.
the restaurants don't have as much to lose as they think. the people who want what they want will just ignore the labels anyway.

(35,320 posts)I mean, I've been in a small Papa John's or two and they have perhaps 2, 3 tables, mostly for people waiting for take-out. No menu board. And, in fact, if they had one nobody would be able to read it. They barely had room for the required work-safety/work-place rules posters.

(15,882 posts)who stands to lose their life without insurance, of the about `40,000,000 not covered, can just fuck off and die.
They have a 40% greater risk of early death compared to those who have health insurance.
Seems like it would be more humane to cover everyone, not just people who can afford to donate to political campaigns and bank$ters.
