Bernie Sanders gets a boisterous welcome in Arlington
Source: W Post
By John Wagner
Northern Virginia got a taste Thursday night of the enthusiasm buoying the presidential campaign of Bernie Sanders, as the senator from Vermont drew a boisterous crowd to a policy forum in Arlington and railed against the political influence of the billionaire class.
Sanders singled out Republican White House hopeful Jeb Bush at the event, citing the unprecedented $114 million that the former Florida governor and an allied super PAC announced Thursday they had raised during the first six months of the year.
This money is clearly coming from the wealthiest people in the country, said Sanders, a self-described democratic socialist who has emerged as the leading rival to Hillary Rodham Clinton for the Democratic nomination. Theres no accident that Jeb Bush and other Republican candidates who take huge amounts of money from the wealthy and the powerful come up with an agenda that represents the wealthy and the powerful.
The event, sponsored by an array of Democratic and other left-leaning groups, was billed as a discussion of progressive policy issues and not as a campaign rally. It featured a second speaker on stage with Sanders, Rep. Don Beyer (D-Va.).

I eyeballed 350-400 at least; someone here heard 600. A Full House for the 2-hour, 7-9 forum event with US Rep. Don Beyer, VA-8th. Some people arrived 1 1/2 hrs. early to get a seat.

(7,153 posts)Beyer actually represents the 8th VA (roughly Arlington/Alexandria/Falls Church), one of the bluest of blue districts in the US.
Thanks for the report. I'm sure quite a few more would have tried to attend if the event had been more widely announced.

(9,655 posts)Sanderss campaign said it had not promoted Thursday nights event to its supporters through e-mail or social media, and organizers said they stopped accepting RSVPs more than a week ago when they reached about 600 more than the capacity of the auditorium.
People who inquired in recent days about attending had been told theyd be turned away, organizers said.

(18,124 posts)is on us and our security, safety gained in a rational non-imperialistic manner. He is speaking to thinking, rational people who just want to enjoy the life we have without threatening others or being threatened. That last, hard to accomplish, but possible with the concern and coalitions he speaks of. That bit about the Saudi's, well they run us, don't they..... Our blood for their oil seems to be the deal and has been for a long time now. He is on point, always, it seems. He is doing and has done his homework.

(5,644 posts)...in the media yesterday, everyone was saying how Bernie will never beat Hillary (my guy Josh Barrow says so too) even though Bernie was enjoying the advantages of larger crowds. It came down to Hillary was raking in more money. To me, Bernie represents the poor man's President. So, for ever dollar Bernie takes in, there are at least 2 others that can't afford to contribute that supports him. I think a Hillary win is not so inevitable as the others seem to be saying.

(14 posts)How does Bernie beat the monied interests at the primaries? This seems to be the biggest hurdle of all, right? I think the media distractions of predicting he has no chance, his chances will go significantly higher if our country is mired into a gloomy prospect for economy w/ the news that is happening now...
So i encourage the gamblers of wall street & their ilk to continue betting everything, the world is watching if the next crash happens.

(41,140 posts)Sanders unlike most M$M which is refreshing. Hope it's ok that I posted event video highlights here late last night when I saw inquiries. In my revised, much improved BSG post on the event I just finished, I kept in the sort of cross reference to this OP and you to view the videos and Post report.

(41,140 posts)if anyone's interested. Note, it's a bit long w/images, etc., whatev.
This was a free public policy forum (not a campaign event) which I was so disappointed to learn was closed more than a week ago on a DU post on another topic I saw with a small note about the affair. But in checking out a Dem. website for any Bernie groups the day before, I noticed a small mention, clicked to register and was stunned when it went through. So lucky I was for real.
Although I've followed Sanders closely for several years, I was unprepared for how commanding, dignified and good natured and humorous he is in person. Brainy and sharp goes without saying. While he's patient and dignified, he's also a fighter which I respect.
There were at least 500 people there, many interested in policy and also supporters of Bernie. I was happy to pass along, give out to people in my seated row a large roll of blue Bernie 2016 campaign stickers/seals I brought with me.
It was an amazing 2 hours. Bernie's powerful voice, presence and message resonate like nothing I've ever seen, and I've attended a few of these. GO SANDERS 2016!
