Tom Selleck Reaches Tentative Deal in Water Theft Lawsuit, Agency Says
Source: nbcnews
Actor Tom Selleck reached a tentative settlement Thursday with a California water district that accused him of receiving water taken from a fire hydrant and transported across district boundaries, an attorney for the agency told NBC News.
Attorney Grant Burton, who is general counsel for the Calleguas Municipal Water District in Ventura County, said the terms of the tentative settlement were confidential until a final agreement was reached.
Marty Singer, who is representing Selleck, could not immediately be reached for comment.
Burton said Selleck hired a third-party company which broke Metropolitan Water District rules by taking water from a hydrant in one water district to another.
The water district sued Selleck and his wife this week. The suit sought an order forcing Selleck to stop using the district's water, plus reimbursement for the $21,685.55 it paid to a private investigator, with damages and other costs.

(17,997 posts)But maybe it wasn't a crime that would have caused more than a ticket. I'm sure laws protecting water rights, with severe repercussions, will be enacted soon
I don't understand how Nestlé hasn't been charged with anything

My guess is, the crime was committed by the company that took the water
They'd likely have to prove he authorized them stealing the water

Thing is, I bet a lot of them aren't even using those homes. These are people with homes around the world and who are easily able to pay for expensive hotels. Unless you have a pressing reason to be in your LA during the summer, and a summer of drought to boot, you probably aren't.

(4,673 posts)A good friend ripped out her lawn and at great expense put in artificial turf, which seemed absolutely real as I walked across it. Man they've come a long way with that stuff. It was =pricey!= but I'd be surprised if that hadn't started happening among some of the Hollywood set, you know - the Democratic part.
I'm not aware of any restrictions on topping up existing pools, but many communities have banned filling once drained.

(26,366 posts)WESTLAKE VILLAGE Water from a public hydrant that Tom Selleck has been accused of stealing from in dry California was legally purchased, an official said.
The Calleguas Municipal Water District in Ventura County sued the "Magnum, P.I." star, alleging that a tanker truck filled up at the hydrant and took it to Selleck's 60-acre ranch more than a dozen times in the past two years.
The district announced a tentative settlement with Selleck on Thursday.
Jay Spurgin, public works director for Thousand Oaks, said a construction company paid a fee to secure the rights to draw water from the city hydrant two years ago. About 1.4 million gallons of water were taken from the hydrant during that period.
