At Least 22 People Killed in Stampede in Bangladesh

Source: AP

Police in Bangladesh say at least 22 people have been killed in a stampede during a charity handout during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

Police officer Kamrul Islam says another 30 people have been injured early Friday in Mymensingh, a town north of the capital, Dhaka.

Islam says that hundreds of people had gathered outside the home of a local businessman and they stormed in when the gates were opened to collect free clothing.

Stampedes are common at religious places and during charity handouts in South Asian countries.

It's very sad that a few have the majority of the world's money but the majority have almost nothing.

Crowd control and stampedes are pretty well understood at this point; it's mostly a question of having the resources to implement the right measures.
