Bolivia's President Evo Morales places a traditional Bolivian hat on Pope Francis' head during the second World Meeting of Popular Movements in Santa Cruz, Bolivia, Thursday, July 9, 2015.

SANTA CRUZ, Bolivia Pope Francis has cast himself as the spiritual and political leader of the worlds oppressed with his remarkable mea culpa for the sins and crimes of the Catholic Church against the indigenous peoples during the colonial conquest of the Americas.
. . .
Francis humbly begged forgiveness Thursday at a gathering of indigenous leaders in Bolivia in the presence of Bolivias first-ever indigenous president, Evo Morales, the climactic high of Francis weeklong South American tour.
In the speech, Francis noted that Latin American church leaders in the past had acknowledged that grave sins were committed against the native peoples of America in the name of God. St. John Paul II, for his part, apologized to the continents indigenous for the pain and suffering caused during the 500 years of the churchs presence in the Americas during a 1992 visit to the Dominican Republic.
. . .
I would also say, and here I wish to be quite clear, as was St. John Paul II: I humbly ask forgiveness, not only for the offenses of the church herself, but also for crimes committed against the native peoples during the so-called conquest of America, he said to applause from the crowd.

(160,542 posts)It's their contention if something unspeakable happened to darker humans, or any leftists, it was their fault, and they had it coming.
The Right is the scum of the earth. What a wreck they've made of our world. All the real intelligence comes from healthy, balanced minds, all real progress comes from healthy minds. The Right lives to exploit it.
You nailed it: "Apology Tour." Screw'em.

(16,881 posts)"... Pope Francis on Thursday urged the downtrodden to change the world economic order, denouncing a "new colonialism" by agencies that impose austerity programs and calling for the poor to have the "sacred rights" of labour, lodging and land...
... Quoting a fourth century bishop, he called the unfettered pursuit of money "the dung of the devil," and said poor countries should not be reduced to being providers of raw material and cheap labour for developed countries...
... "This system is by now intolerable: farm workers find it intolerable, labourers find it intolerable, communities find it intolerable, peoples find it intolerable
The earth itself our sister, Mother Earth, as Saint Francis would say also finds it intolerable," he said in an hour-long speech that was interrupted by applause and cheering dozens of times...
... "The new colonialism takes on different faces. At times it appears as the anonymous influence of mammon: corporations, loan agencies, certain 'free trade' treaties, and the imposition of measures of 'austerity' which always tighten the belt of workers and the poor," he said...

Of course, a) those rather recherche comestibles are not part of the diet of most Brits, and b) as we know, 'pausterity' is not part of the regimen of the wealthy.

They wrote a lot of records and reports about those times. People deserve to know all the details about what their ancestors went through.

(22,913 posts)But you already know that. We can all feel guilty for the things we do wrong personally. We can and should still be sorry about wrongs that predate our own lives, and apologize that they happened when they happened at the hands of those we are descended from or who did those deeds claiming to represent something that is still important to us today. Of course the Pope is right to apologize today, and it is never too late for a nation founded on a foundation that included legal slavery to openly and officially apologize for that fact.

(53,661 posts)And they continue to suffer the exact same things today? The corporations are just the latest vultures who found venal locals to sell out to them.
And DESTROY THE ECOSPHERE.
It's been said the joining of the indigneous people and their wisdom is essential to the survival of all people and the planet. We can choose to keep running our horses off of cliffs or pull back on the reins and live.
The cultures that disregarded this were and still are necessary in the evolution of humanity on a global scale. They are playing their part in a reality odd to both peoples.
It is necessary to meld with those who have a track record, for the most part, of living with natural means. The Earth cannot keep being used the way that it is, as if it were a dead thing and a commodity.
To learn what we must become, we have to have an open dialogue, and requires listening on the terms of those who have not been listened to for centuries. It will be very strange and alien to the listeners.
It requires hearing the truth, and if that needs forgiveness, it must be requested. Or the lies will continue and we'll be destroyed. Learning what one clearly DID NOT KNOW must happen to heal is essential. The planet itself KNOWS.
