Actor Omar Sharif, best known for his roles in classic films Lawrence of Arabia and Doctor Zhivago, has died aged 83.

Egypt-born Sharif won two Golden Globe awards and an Oscar nomination for his role as Sherif Ali in David Lean's 1962 epic Lawrence of Arabia.

He won a further Golden Globe three years later for Doctor Zhivago.

Earlier this year, his agent confirmed he had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease.

His agent Steve Kenis said: "He suffered a heart attack this afternoon in a hospital in Cairo."

Loved him when he paired with Barbra Streisand.

May he rest in peace and may his family and friends find comfort in their memories of him.

Lawrence (Peter O'Toole) at the well and Sherif Ali (Omar) appearing as a tiny dot on the horizon.

Steven Spielberg said that before he saw "Lawrence" he wanted to be a doctor. After he saw Lawrence he wanted to be a director.

in my youth - Dr. Zhivago and Lawrence. Yes, I know , in retrospect, they were great movies - but Lord, for a young guy with places to go and things to do, they went on forever.

Dementia is a cruel disease.

I wouldn't wish it on anyone, definitely not such a talented and charming man like Mr. Sharif.

Cairo is sketchy for medicine on a good day. And lately, it's not a good day there.

RIP Monsieur Ibrahim....(if you have not seen that film, I recommend it--it's in French but you can find it with the sub-titles--the clever Sharif plays a Turk and speaks a bit of Turkish in the film; he is very believable).

Look what I found, on edit (subtitled, too, if you need that):

I think if you enjoy good acting and a cracking good story, you will enjoy this film....

Perhaps he wanted to die in his homeland. Nothing wrong with that.

He was one of my favorite actors, I especially like his stuff in more recent years. Such nuance...

but the character he played is too much of a myth for me. I'm interested in what the real Lawrence of Arabia story but after giving up early I went into the early history of Iraq with all the coups and assassinations or "accidents" -- "there are no accidents in Iraq" -- from actor playing Saddam's ex-wife in "House of Saddam". Interesting despite all the changes, much has stayed the same. Reading Iraq in the 50s is like now without the Wahabbi group (though I image Saudi Arabia was expanding influence from the get go (1918)

Such a crush I had on Omar Sharif when my 15-year old self saw Doctor Zhivago in the movie theater when it first came out! I went to see it over and over again until I knew every scene, every bit of dialogue by heart.

Many thanks, habibi, for all the pleasure you brought to my heart.
