South Carolina Lowers Confederate Flag and an Era Ends

Source: New York Times

Friday, July 10, 2015 10:11 AM EDT

Closing a chapter on a symbol of the Deep South and its history of resistance and racial animus, South Carolina on Friday lowered the Confederate battle flag from outside its State House, where it had flown for more than 50 years.

The flag came down amid heavy security at a Friday morning event that followed days of emotional debate in the Legislature and, on Thursday, the final approval of Gov. Nikki R. Haley, who had pledged that the symbol would be lowered “with dignity.”

Shielded across the decades by both Democrats and Republicans, the flag left its pole outside the State House only 23 days after nine black churchgoers were killed at Charleston’s Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church.

And add a marker indicating the history of the flag of hate that used to be flown from it. Since many will not remember that the battle flag was not flown continuously since the Civil War and was only put up during the Civil Rights Movement, a plaque that covers that history and why it was taken down would be instructive. It could also be a memorial to the nine who were killed in the name of that piece of cloth.

The marker could also direct people who want to remember the traitor Confederate heritage to the museum where the flag will be stored.

But that little fenced area where it has stood for fifty years would be a perfect place for a memorial plaque. I'd make a contribution to put one up in place of that hateful symbol that just came down.

A true & fitting spot to honor the 9 murdered is still the best I have heard.

Then show their murderer, Dylan Roof what became of his stupidity.

I too would make a donation for that memorial.

and there was a huge gap in time.
Without the marker they can say it always was there for heritage and fallen soldiers bs when it has only been up there 50 yrs coinciding with civil rights

The symbol is gone, but racist practices will continue just the same.

Disclaimer: this is not an endorsement of the Confederacy, its flag, racism, the South, etc.

That's huge. Private symbols or sentiments cannot be controlled, because of free speech. But to remove the imprimatur of the government from these symbols is a huge step forward.

Racism is henceforth purely "underground" and not institutionally sanctioned. And underground is where things go to die.

Great, as a start, but lets NOT be fooled. There is a long way to go before the "Civil War" ends in this country. Until all can vote without being subject to persecution and bias, until all have a fair chance to thrive...then it ends....we may not call it slavery, but many in this country still are "slaves".... slaves to working 2, 3 jobs to make ends meet. We still have a lot of work too do.... lets get our Democrat President and congress.... then we start.

While everyone was laser-focused on the Confederate flag, they stole your pensions. FYI. Back to what's important - the Union won the Civil War, dammit! Take down them 150-year-old symbols of a failed rebellion!

A sad day for repukes in South Carolina, they are the ones who supported flying the flag. Nikki Haley resisted those who wanted the flag brought down, it was only when she saw no other way to save face she agreed to back legislation to do so.
