George Lindsey, known as Goober Pyle, dies
Source: Detroit News
Nashville, Tenn. George Lindsey, who spent nearly 30 years as the grinning Goober on "The Andy Griffith Show" and "Hee Haw," has died. He was 83.
A press release from Marshall-Donnelly-Combs Funeral Home in Nashville said Lindsay died early Sunday morning after a brief illness. Funeral arrangements were still being made.
Lindsey was the beanie-wearing Goober on "The Andy Griffith Show" from 1964 to 1968 and its successor, "Mayberry RFD," from 1968 to 1971. He played the same jovial character a service station attendant on "Hee Haw" from 1971 until it went out of production in 1993.
"America has grown up with me," Lindsey said in an Associated Press interview in 1985. "Goober is every man; everyone finds something to like about ol' Goober."

I'm more of a Barney/Gomer guy, but this Boomer is saddened by this news. He seemed like a good guy.
Glad Andy, Gomer and Thelma Lou are still with us, but we are running out of time, except for Opie.
Here's how the article concludes. Judy, Judy, Judy:
Lindsey devoted much of his spare time to raising funds for the Alabama Special Olympics. For 17 years, he sponsored a celebrity golf tournament in Montgomery, Ala., that raised money for the mentally disabled.
The University of North Alabama awarded him an honorary doctorate in 1992, and he was affectionately called "Doctor Goober" by acquaintances after that.

(6,960 posts)... First, the one where Andy has to go out of town and leaves Goober to answer the telephone.
Goober, to stay near the phone, rebuilds Gilly's (Larry Hovis, Carter on Hogan's Heros) car inside the sheriff's office.
Second, one of the post Don Knotts episodes where Goober grows a beard and miraculously becomes an 'intellectual'.
Goober was dumber even than Gomer ... but perhaps more lovable.
RIP George Lindsey.

Go peacefully Goober, and say hello to Barney, Gomer and Aunt Bea.

(24,721 posts)I was more into Barney & Gomer, too, but George Lindsey was a fixture on Baby Boomers' television.
Those of you who have Encore on cable may have seen him on several Alfred Hitchcock Hour episodes lately.
"Bed of Roses" was especially good. George plays a cab driver who drives a man in the middle of the night to see an old girlfriend who happens to be dead when he arrives. After the story appears in the newspaper the next morning, George visits the man at his office with blackmail in mind. Poor ol' George ends up in a "bed of roses", soon accompanied by another surprise blackmailer.

(20,453 posts)All the stuff from Andy Griffith (Mayberry RFD, Green Acres...) They were all contributing to funny / cute comedy the whole family could enjoy. It was so hokey, and the characters, like Goober...
Shazam, and rest in peace, buddy...

(295 posts)I remember seeing him in an episode of MASH, playing an overly-funloving but obnoxious visiting surgeon who drove BJ and Charles out of their minds! And he had a line in that show that sticks with me to this day: "Well, strap my face to the side of a pig and roll me in the mud!" Over 30 years later, I still use that expression for comedic (or sarcastic) effect.
Always saddened to learn of the passing of an icon or character from my younger years. RIP Mr. Lindsey.
