Coontown': A noxious, racist corner of Reddit survives recent purge
Source: Washingyon Post
Warning: This post contains graphic language.
In a place where anything went, it seems that more and more has got to go and some of what remains is still exceptionally objectionable.....
Yet, despite Huffmans comments, r/CoonTown lives on.
CoonTown, as its loathsome name might suggest, is a subreddit for racists. CoonTown offers a buffet of crude jokes and racial slurs; complaints about the liberal media; links to news stories that highlight black-on-white crime or Confederate pride; and discussions of black people appropriating white culture.
Some examples of comments on CoonTown that, technically, are printable:
No. 1: Have you ever considered black people as a whole and asked yourself, What the fk is wrong with them?
No. 2: I fking hate nr lovers.
No. 3: Get with it, you stupid nrs.
Perhaps thats enough to get the idea.

This is the most shared story at thw Washington Post. This tells you something about their readers and the people that live in DC. Disgusting.

(14,255 posts)foolish. Also I think that the Washington Post can be read, commented on, and shared by oh, let's see - everyone on the World Wide Web. Not just Washington DC. Geographical put-downs, whether of a city, a state, a part of the country, or an online entity, cause more harm than good. The people you don't like don't care what you think, the others who are not like them are offended. I agree that some people in DC, like the GOP and Third Wayer types, are disgusting.

(14,733 posts)So why be surprised that a lot of folks are sharing it at WaPo? Or assume that their readers are any different than folks reading it here?

(306 posts)I See the trolls who'd like to defend that toxic pit of slime are not only all over reddit downvoting any kind of dissent or objection to their hatred, but they are active here as well. Brigading which is also supposed to be a ban offense but they seem to get away with it just fine.
Spez said he'd RECLASSIFY /r/rcoontown.....The Reddit Admins hypocrisy knows no limits.
I dare you trolls to try that shit here!

Reddit has 1000s of subs that are VERY nice - liberal, nature, trees (weed ), justice, love and hate - most of them are very good and respectful.

(12,530 posts)It's like saying San Francisco is the anus of the US--or Detroit, or New York or Dallas or Seattle or Kansas City. Reddit is like a large city. Don't go to the bad parts unless you want to be there. I've been on Reddit for several years, and I've never seen the kind of garbage being referenced here. I know it's out there, but I don't go to those subreddits. I go to some of the other several thousands of subreddits where hate isn't spewed.

(4,138 posts)Each subreddit is its own entity. Certainly the music instrument subreddits that I follow are moderated, and don't put up with any sort of toxic bullshit.
That said, it would be nice if they would purge outright hate speech clearinghouse subs like the one in the OP.

Gore, shock, racism - if it isn't illegal in the good ol' USofA, it's still OK on Reddit. I haven't had much use for them in years, it's been a festering pit for a lot longer than it's been in the news, but I'm alright with the line where it's drawn. You don't have to look at CoonTown or Spacedicks and they're gonna congregate somewhere..

(18,124 posts)that is coming to a head, believe it or not. Head in sand or not. Privileged blindness or not. This shit is going to have a day of enormous reckoning for this society, unless humans of privilege can balance out their hates, fears and denial of the brutality and extreme ignorance of this racist nation. Washington Post? Not surprised. That it survives online? Not surprised. Racism has survived and is growing.
