RNC Condemns Donald Trump's Remarks About John McCain

Source: TPM

Reacting swiftly to Donald Trump's disparaging remarks Saturday about Sen. John McCain's war service, the Republican National Committee issued a statement saying there was "no place in our party or our country" for such comments.

"Senator McCain is an American hero because he served his country and sacrificed more than most can imagine. Period," said Sean Spicer, the RNC's chief strategist and communications director. "There is no place in our party or our country for comments that disparage those who have served honorably.”

The RNC's rebuke came after Trump made the comments during an appearance in Iowa at the Family Leader Summit, where many of the GOP presidential contenders were in attendance.

Trump said McCain "is a war hero because he was captured. I like people who weren't captured."

GOP Contenders Slam Trump's Comments About John McCain

The 2016 GOP presidential contenders were quick to condemn Donald Trump's remarks Saturday suggesting John McCain, who was a prisoner of war in Vietnam, was only a "war hero" because he was captured. "I like people who weren't captured," Trump said, to some boos from the Iowa audience.

The comments from Trump came at the Family Leader Summit In Ames, where as many as 10 of the GOP hopefuls were present. Trump comment's came during a back and forth with moderator Frank Luntz, who pressed Trump about previously calling McCain a "dummy."

Ted Cruz was more circumspect than some of the others when asked to respond to Trump's comments. "I recognize that folks in the press love to see Republican on Republican violence," Cruz said, according to the Associated Press. "You want me to say something bad about Donald Trump or bad about John McCain or bad about anyone else and I'm not going to do it."

Does anyone here remember the "Swift Boat" campaign that was funded by prominent GOP rich people and directed against John Kerry?

Ted Cruz's comments reflect his usual blend of cowardice and refusal to take a stand unless polling tells him it is time to take a stand.

"This statement is the opinion of the Republican National Committee. The opinions expressed herein are not the actual opinions of any specific person or candidate. We just had to say this. We all like Donald Trump, consider him a friend, and would accept an invitation to play golf at one of his resorts whenever he invites us."

Chickenshit George Bush gets Daddy to get him into the Alabama National Guard from which he is AWOL, but Karl Rove smears a VOLUNTEER war hero in John Kerry and NOT ONE Republican, including McCain, had the courage to say it was wrong. Remember the mocking Purple Heart Band aids at their convention? I really despise the GOP!

I respect the terrible torture he endured as a US military person. I respect that he refused to be set free because of the silver spoon sticking out of his ass, and we all respect and are grateful for his military service. Is he a hero? Depends on your criteria for "what makes someone a hero".

Just saying. Am I a hero? I followed the draft and served in Vietnam for a few months before I was blown up and came home in pieces. I don't consider what I did to be an act of heroism. I simply did what was expected of me as a young American who loved his country and was loyal to the call of duty in the military. Not sure I would do that again if I had to make the choice; but I did it then. NOT a hero. Simply a loyal American who answered the call of the draft...something we maybe should have MANDATORY for ALL young people today...in one form or another.

was that McCain's being captured didn't make him a hero
(which, to me, it does). Trump said he likes those who
don't get captured - as if getting captured was not honorable.

yet, politics aside, his service and subsequent term as a POW are off limits, I would think. When I came home, I had 1049'd to vietnam, I was VVAW and have been on all adventures that WASTE good american lives for the 1%ers and whatever PTB is in main office, in D.C. I respect your position and glad, in spite of your injuries, that you made it back from that green hell. I just did what was expected, my family was/is a military family from waaaaay back. I had to go. I joined and it went from there. Would I change it if I could ? Yeah, some things, but the experience I gained was an eye opener and I would not trade it for anything. I learned how to fight for what I wanted protected, my buddies and me and have used that experience against the trumpchumps of the nation. Still am.
