Jeb Bush defends McCain, but supported Swift Boat attacks against Kerry
Source: CNN
After Donald Trump questioned Republican Sen. John McCain's status as a war hero, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush quickly jumped to McCain's defense.
"Enough with the slanderous attacks. @SenJohnMcCain and all our veterans - particularly POWs have earned our respect and admiration," he tweeted on Saturday.
But that outrage was missing ten years ago, when a political group attacked another Vietnam veteran -- then-Sen. John Kerry, the Democratic nominee who sought to unseat Bush's brother, the incumbent president, during the 2004 election.
Instead, Bush praised Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, the group that lobbed attacks questioning Kerry's service record in Vietnam -- attacks McCain unequivocally criticized in 2004 as "dishonest and dishonorable."

(113,091 posts)ALL Republicans lie and attack when it serves the GOP agenda. Even as we speak, they are preparing lies and attacks against their next heroic target - the Pope.
will be most interesting to see how the supposedly "religious" Catholic republican politicos (Boehner, Santorum, Jeb, and more) respond to the pope's US visit: it will be such a pleasure to watch those sanctimonious hypocrites squirm. (As they have already). In all honesty, I worry about the Pope's physical safety during his US visit.

(2,707 posts)let's hope someone in the media takes him to task. Of course tho, the media loves the Bushes and elected them in 2004, so I doubt it.

(58,724 posts)Spartanburg, South Carolina (CNN)Jeb Bush on Tuesday defended a 2005 letter that he wrote praising the work of Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, a group that questioned then-Sen. John Kerry's military service record in Vietnam.
Speaking at an event in Spartanburg, South Carolina, Bush also argued that if Republicans accept Donald Trump's "ugly" and "mean-spirited" language, then "we'll never win."
The former Florida governor was asked by a panel, which was hosted by the Palladian View in Spartanburg, about the Swift Boat attacks against Kerry in light of the recent attack on John McCain by Trump -- who, like Bush -- is running for president.
Bush confirmed he sent the letter to the head of the group, Col. George "Bud" Day, a highly decorated veteran who was McCain's cellmate in Vietnam, and thanked him for his service. Bush added that he's not backing down from what he wrote.
"He won every award possible," Bush said, talking about Day's military record. "He served in three wars and if he says that there was a problem, I believed him. He's a great Floridian and a great American and so I wrote him a note thanking him for his service. Not going to change my beliefs about that at all. "

(47,534 posts)Where were they when the minions of George W. Bushs 2000 presidential campaign in South Carolina (just days before the South Carolina primary) viciously smeared McCain with vile allegations about his character?
Remember? They called McCain a liar, mentally unstable because he was a POW, a traitor for talking to the Viet Cong during his captivity, and a user of prostitutes, and they accused him of having an out-of-wedlock black child. All of these malicious charges were 100 percent false. But they worked McCain was ahead of Bush going into the South Carolina primary; hed just won the New Hampshire primary by 19 points. But he lost South Carolina and, eventually, the Republican nomination. Todays GOP and its numerous band of wannabes should open their eyes, realize they live in a glass house and put their stones down.

(3,051 posts)While I detest Trump (and the sideshow surrounding him), he's right in that McCain is a loser and had a less-than-stellar military career.
McCain (whose daddy was an admiral during Vietnam and whose daddy before him was also an admiral) was a complete wash-out at the Naval Academy -- bottom of the class.
He crashed his first plane, due to pilot error.
Crashed another hot dogging under power lines
Crashed yet another going to the Army/Navy game
Was implicated in the worst Naval accident since WWII, where 150 sailors died due to a misfire of a Zuni missile on deck
And finally, the shoot down in Vietnam? He panicked over target, dodged an imaginary SAM, dropped his bomb into a populated/non-military area, and, in the process of dodging the imaginary SAM, flew directly into the path of anti-aircraft fire.
He even botched the ejection from the plane, ignored his training, and managed to be one of the very few who really hurt themselves ejecting from a plane.
And, more to the point, he's been over the VA mess for decades. The failures there land with him.
So, let the Republicans eat each other. McCain deserves it.

(32,077 posts)Congrats, a new record. McCain was not implicated in the Forestall fire. The rocket hit his plane and he was almost killed. I can tell you have never been in a military aircraft either Navy or the Air Force. Pilots dread ejecting planes. The chance of being hurt is very high and some end up as paraplegics. Some go down with a plane rather than to do it. The rest of your shit is just your imaginary allegations without a shred of proof.

Regarding military aircraft, you are correct, I have not been in one since WWII, and there I considered it a luxury compared to my usual mode of transport, which involved wading ashore to France in ill-fitting boots (thankfully a solid two weeks after D-day), but I did manage to basically walk to the Rhine.
