CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Investigators following up on leads going back 43 years have found human remains in a 1968 Pontiac recovered from a lake in North Carolina.

Sheriff’s investigators told local media outlets on Wednesday the car model matches the car belonging to a person reported missing on Feb. 19, 1972.

Sheriff’s Lt. Aaron Barlowe said the remains will be transferred to the N.C. Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for an autopsy and identification. He said there were no signs of foul play so far.

Barlowe said investigators and a dive team used advanced sonar to find the car in 30 feet of water. ... The missing person’s identity hasn’t been released. ... Lake Rhodhiss, where the car and remains were found, is approximately 75 miles northwest of Charlotte.

I think that title will change: finding found remains. It's AP's choice, and it shows up everywhere that used AP as a source.

Wow, another one of these incidents. First, there was that Camaro out in Oklahoma. Then, there was another one a few months back. Both are at DU. I'll find them. Here we go:

The dental records and maybe some clothing labels will be what the coroner has to go on.

A car in 30 feet of water is very plain on a modern "fish finder" with side scan technology. Then it's a matter of sending divers down to hook up the car.

It contained remains that are believed to be those of Amos Shook. Shook was reported missing in 1972, and his case remained unsolved until investigators searched the lake with sonar at the family’s request. (Caldwell County (N.C./Associated Press)

SAWMILLS, N.C. — A rusty, mud-caked sedan pulled from the bottom of a lake in the foothills of the North Carolina mountains could bring closure to the family of a retired airman who disappeared 43 years ago. ... Investigators believe human remains found in a 1968 Pontiac Catalina recovered Tuesday from Lake Rhodhiss belong to Amos Shook, who was reported missing on Feb. 19, 1972. The model matches the car that belonged to Shook, and investigators found his identification and wallet in the car.

“We found a wallet and some ID cards in it. It amazed us how preserved that stuff was,” Caldwell County Sheriff Alan Jones said at a news conference.

The four-door sedan showed some rust, but the windows were intact after it was pulled from the lake about 75 miles northwest of Charlotte. There were no signs of foul play.
....

Shook, who was 44 when he disappeared, had retired from the U.S. Air Force and lived in the town of Sawmills, which lies just north of the lake. The mostly rural area was home to the first modern furniture factories starting in the late 19th century, according to a county website, and empty buildings in the heart of Sawmills point to its manufacturing past.
