Los Angeles police officer gets jail for assaulting woman
Source: AP
LOS ANGELES (AP) A veteran Los Angeles police officer has been sentenced to 16 months in jail for kicking and striking a handcuffed woman who later died.
Fifty-year-old Mary O'Callaghan was sentenced Thursday to the maximum three years in jail, but the judge suspended the last 20 months of her term.
O'Callaghan was found guilty of assault under color of authority during the arrest of 35-year-old Alesia Thomas in 2012.
A dashboard camera recorded O'Callaghan kicking Thomas in the groin, abdomen and upper thigh, and jabbing her in the throat.

(7,670 posts)but you would think the medical examiner would be able to determine that, they are in LA, I'm sure they get plenty of people OD'ing on Coke everyday. So its not like it would be unusual or unheard of, and they would be able to identify markers related to that.
But someone who was bashed in the throat and kicked repeatedly? They couldn't determine what ultimately killed them? That's straight up bullshit.

Sandra was terrorized by this thug period. He could not come up with a reason why she was being arrested after she asked him 14 times.

we see some kind of "sentence" for police abuse. She should have been convicted of manslaughter for this.
Edited to change murder to manslaughter, as I'm pretty sure she did not intend to murder her.
cstanleytech
(26,319 posts)would probably have had to determine her death to have been caused by homicide, without that determination it makes securing a murder conviction that can survive an appeal pretty difficult I would imagine.
So no, they convicted her properly but a longer time in jail was certainly warranted and I dont mean 6 months more I mean 10 - 20 years more because she damn well knew better than to hit someone in handcuffs no matter what the alleged justification.

she kicked her in the abdomen and crotch. Multiple times.
I don't know what the autopsy showed...I agree with you on that. Maybe she didn't die from being kicked.
Edited to update after reading article link
OK, so she said she couldn't breath, and she was hit in the throat...I don't know if she said that before or after she was hit. Why are people ignored when they say they cannot breath. I have asthma...I know what it feels like to not be able to breath, and panic makes it even worse. This needs to stop...when someone has drugs in their system and they are acting out, they need medical attention, not assault.
