Lafayette movie theater shooting: Injury count increases to 9

Including the gunman, a total of 12 people were shot at The Grand Theatre in Lafayette on Thursday night (July 23), officials said as they revised the number of injured from seven to nine.

Three people died in the shooting, including the shooter, who police say died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Police are not yet publicly identifying the shooter, who was described as a 58-year-old white male. Lafayette Police Chief Jim Craft, speaking at a news conference at about 1:45 a.m. Friday, said investigators have multiple addresses for the suspect -- including in different states -- and are working to follow up on all of those leads.

Craft provided more details early Friday about how the series of events unfolded. Witnesses told police the shooter was "seated in the theater just like everybody else," apparently watching the comedy "Trainwreck" with the rest of the audience, when he stood up and started shooting with a semi-automatic handgun. The first two people he shot were directly in front of him, Craft said.

the middle aged gunman. If he were black that would be included, why isn't it white?
I know the answer, the unspoken rule that white is the norm and black is not.

I am a 65 yo southern white woman raised by a liberal Democrat. I see more racism every day in our culture and I am appalled.

his photo would be plastered all over the place, all the words used by the media to describe an AA perp, exclusively, would be included in the article. It's privilege, you know. White terrorism is not an acknowledged problem yet, racial or not.

He has since been identified, and is described as a "drifter." I've googled and haven't been able to find a pic yet, but if he was indeed a "drifter" it's very possible there are no pics of him available from when he was still alive, and it's not likely that the police will release his crime scene shots.

Identified as John Russell Housser.

• 58-year-old white man

• Previously lived in Alabama and has been in Lafayette since early July. Described as a "drifter."

there are young, non shriveled white guys who are racially or otherwise motivated to do these same kind of terrorist actions against POC, their own kind or both. Hard to pick these POS out in a crowd, that's the problem. And with biased background checks or police record checks they usually have a free, privilege pass. dylaan roof is a prime example. He should have NEVER been allowed a weapon. Plus, I won't go too far into #Black Lives Matter, not mattering to our protect and serve servants.... many more thugs and terrorists there.

But if people applied the profiles the way they do to black people, there would be a lot of people like this shooter locked up, but we cannot do that , because American is founded on blue eyed people getting the right to own guns and shoot whoever they want to, right?

The 'default setting', if you will. That's a fact. But, in fact, it is not neutral. It is dominant and treating it as neutral just contributes to the alienation of everyone else and the continued dominance of the white male perspective and interests.

But the media reports I searched out to followup have not mentioned this sick clown as being white. If he is black, first sentence lead leaves no doubt as to who did what to whom. ALWAYS! I'm staying out of theaters. To closed and tight. Perfect target options for a crazy, angry white male, shooting in all directions. Oh he was 'crazy' but his choice of killing ground is calculated and vicious. But terrorists usually are.

Authorities are describing the gunman in the movie theater shooting as a 59-year-old man who previously lived in Alabama but is "kind of a drifter" who had been in the Lafayette area since early July.

Police said Friday that the gunman fired a handgun 13 times inside the theater, killing two people and wounding at least nine others before fatally shooting himself.

Lafayette Police Chief Jim Craft said the gunman parked his car near the theater's exit door and was intent on escaping, but couldn't because police arrived so quickly.

Authorities have not determined a motive. They searched a motel room he had been staying in and found wigs and other disguises.

Houser is from Phoenix City, Alabama, and has no known connection to Lafayette, police said. Houser was described as a drifter by police, who said he had likely been in Lafayette since early July, staying at a motel.

It would be a travesty if this fine weapon was taken out of circulation by the mere fact that it was used in a theAter shooting.

This gun should be taken out of police hands and donated to some unfortunate child who has not yet felt the security that having a gun his or her belt gives the average, under-privileged child.
