Donald Trump Is Crushing Everyone In New Hampshire
Source: Business Insider
Real-estate magnate Donald Trump has opened up a 2-to-1 lead over his closest competition in the key, first-in-the-nation primary state of New Hampshire, according to a new poll from Monmouth University released Tuesday. Trump grabs 24% of the vote, compared with 12% for former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush. Newcomer and Ohio Gov. John Kasich has already jumped into a third-place tie with Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker at 7%.
The poll is evidence that the controversy that surrounded Trump last week when he questioned Sen. John McCain's (R-Arizona) military record has not hurt his standing with Granite State voters. The Monmouth poll was the first to be conducted in the state entirely after those comments. "The controversy over comments about John McCains war service do not appear to have slowed the Trump steamroller," said Patrick Murray, director of the Monmouth University Polling Institute.
Here's the rest of the top 10:
Marco Rubio (6%)
Ben Carson (5%)
Rand Paul (5%)
Chris Christie (4%)
Carly Fiorina (3%)
Ted Cruz (3%)
According to the poll, Trump appears to be sapping away the most support from Walker, Cruz, and Christie. If Trump were not in the race, his current supporters say they would mostly back either Christie (15%), Walker (14%), or Cruz (14%). Trump grabs 36% of the vote of self-identified "very conservative" voters, compared with 10% for Walker and 9% for Cruz. He also gets a plurality of support (35%) from self-identified Tea Party voters, far outpacing Walker (13%).

(31,464 posts)New Hampshire is New England's Alabama. Why does the "liberal media" place so much emphasis on two hillbilly states (Iowa being the other)? I don't get it.

(4,144 posts)I still dont think his schtick is gonna play that well in Iowa, (where Walker still leads) but Trump could defiintely win with wingnuts in Florida, South Carolina & NH

(790 posts)Man do I ever resent that. Granted NH at one time was an ugly shade of red, but recently has turned a lovely shade of blue. Alabama indeed!

(11,101 posts)You can lament that fact, but it's still a fact. Winning New Hampshire matters.
Atman
(31,464 posts)It's like winning the first inning of a baseball game. WOO HOO! We're winning! But you still have eight more innings to play. I live here, I know...New Hampshire is Podunk. Some rich dudes own a newspaper here, and the press will spend a gazillion dollars covering the race, the hotels will be full, the restaurants won't be able to take your reservation...but in the end, who cares? It's New Hampshire. Tell me anything else you love about New Hampshire, or why you care?
DefenseLawyer
(11,101 posts)You hate New Hampshire, I get that. I have no opinion on that. But have you never followed politics before? Do you seriously think that winning New Hampshire means nothing at all?
Atman
(31,464 posts)Have I ever followed politics before? Let me check my list of 27 Pollie and Reed Awards. Or maybe my work on the Obama campaign. I'll get back to you on what I know about politics.
New Hampshire is a jerkwater state, and the only reason it is important politically is because they hold the first primary. Come visit. Manchester, NH is close to Boston, so the pundit's love to come visit. Manchester loves it because it fill the hotels and restaurants. No one else cares.
New Hampshire is a joke, as is Iowa. Neither state has any actual reflection of America.
DefenseLawyer
(11,101 posts)by virtue of being the first caucus and the first primary, since they are small and rural and white, I doubt many would disagree with you. But, if you continue to suggest that, in the system that we have, that winning New Hampshire "doesn't matter" then you are delusional and you should give those awards back immediately.
Atman
(31,464 posts)I'm not giving back any awards.
Look at history. New Hampshire and Iowa only matter because of MEDIA COVERAGE. So, yeah...I guess they matter. But you know as well as I do that they don't really matter. Do you think Florida gives a shit about what New Hampshire thinks?
Iowa and New Hampshire matter in terms of fund raising. It doesn't mean the winning candidates will move on to win. It only means the corporate media will have a fun story to cover. That is the only purpose of the Iowa/New Hampshire runs. Raise more money, because they're the first in line. Otherwise, they're bullshit.
riderinthestorm
(23,272 posts)Because Iowa and New Hampshire are crucial for those two things.
Even if the winner of those primaries doesn't go on to become the nominee, they still garner power and $$ to wield later. Win win for them
Atman
(31,464 posts)Iowa and New Hampshire only matter for the circus. The winners don't seem to do to well in the actual elections, but we talk about them endlessly to fill in the gaps.

(23,272 posts)and media attention which they parlay into power and influence.
For example, on DU many people are saying that Trump is just in this to kick his teevee career. Which feeds his power and influence long term...that's not nothing.
Santorum, Gingrich, Huckabee etc have all remained well placed to continue influencing Republican politics and media because of their one-time stardom. All 16 of the current Republican candidates know they aren't going to win but they're hoping to grab a big enough piece of the golden calf to ensure their relevance in the future. Do you really think Mark Everson believes he's going to win the nomination?
It's a win win for them. Even better if they can grab some of the loot and Spotlight by winning an early primary. Ka-Ching!!

(31,464 posts)These people are just playing games. They know they have no chance of winning anything. But they've bought themselves news time, media time...they don't even spend their own money, people give it to them, then they live free for a year or so. All of their living is a "business expense." It's a total scam. Carly? Kasich? Do any of these people really have any expectation that they'll win the presidency? Nope. But they'll raise a lot of cash and they'll get air time and their speaking fees will increase.
That's all I meant...New Hampshire and Iowa are bullshit from the standpoint of electability. History proves that. But it helps with your book sales and speaking fees.

(27,247 posts)has gone on to win the nomination all but 4 times since 1948. So it's hardly a "bullshit" primary from that perspective.
On the Democratic side, the winner of New Hampshire has gone on to win the nomination about half of the time since 1952.

And in that great "hillbilly" state of Iowa (which is mostly flat as a pancake), the Democratic winner of the caucuses has gone on to win the nomination all but 2 times since 1980.

(170 posts)Donald Trump would love to have Sarah Palin as part of his inevitable White House administration.
The Republican presidential candidate and celebrity plutocrat appeared Monday on The Palin Update, an actual all-Palin radio show that exists on something called Mama Grizzly Radio (we kid you not).
Host and apparent Palin obsessive Kevin Scholla asked the controversial future president whether he could see himself picking up the phone, giving the governor [Palin] a call and picking her brain on some things, or perhaps having her along in some official capacity.
Trumps response: Id love that. Because she really is somebody who knows whats happening and shes a special person, shes really a special person and I think people know that.
He later claimed Everybody loves her, and added that despite her half-term as governor (due to early resignation), voters like the Sarah Palin kind of strength, you just dont see very much of it anymore.

(4,144 posts)that means Cruz, Huckster, Trump and Rand Paul have to keep thinking that they COULD still win by some miracle.
The quickest way to get a Granitehead to do something is tell him, condescendingly, he'll do the opposite. Contrary is our default and messing with Flatlanders.
Just a reminder, NH went for President Obama ... twice. In small part I'm sure because the "conventional" wisdom said we were racist rightwing hillbillies. In 2008 we elected a Dem gov, senator and both reps, plus a Dem majority in the state ledge.
One other fun fact: NH has the only constitution in which rebellion against a tyranny is not only a right; it's an obligation.

(14,176 posts)Ok first let me adjust my hat...
Now, what I see, based on a self-admitted addictive TV watcher, is that Americans have been conditioned to LOVE reality TV drama. The louder, more boorish behaviour, the more they will watch. Have you ever compared other countries versions of say...Masterchef, or Next Top Model, The Apprentice even? Its like night and day. One show it is all about the screaming and fighting and snide comments behind backs, the other countries take is about cooperation and support (for the most part). Is it any wonder that Survivor did not last too long in other countries versions? As that reality show is ALL about back-stabbing and lying.
Personally I recommend the Australian version of Masterchef. Its where the show started. Its a joy to watch. Its all about the food, not anger, belittling, or ostrisization. You get to know the best of the personalities, not the worst. I learn so much more on that version.
Now I'm not saying there are not assholes in every country. Just that the reigning TV execs in America have decided, deliberately to cast brash antagonistic characters. And now the American public is addicted to that. And mix that addiction with a celebrity mogul status like Trump?....who knows.
(If nominated) he may get a ton of new voters that will vote for him for name recongnition, for celebrity status, for just NOT being the typical politician. Add to that many Republicans that really really really want a firebrand "straight shooter" to represent the country. Diplomacy be damned! There is a huge sector that would LOVE to see something like the President of the United States publicly call Putin an ASS for instance....and I have to admit something about that even appeals to me.
All I'm saying is America created this monster. And like the creator of Frankenstein, the public is invested in him and want him to succeed....just so they can watch.

(111,359 posts)Someone in the bowels of another site I frequent posted a link to a right of center site about it. Since she knows most of us would never visit the linked site, she gave us a quick synopsis, "the RNC/GOP are in a complete panic over the fact that theyve created a GOPzilla monster and now it not only wont die, but threatens to stomp the whole shebang into smoking burnt-turd ashes as it tears through the primaries." There was more, but that was the basic gist of the article.
Expect every peccadillo and every outrage from Trump in his lifespan to be trumpeted in the press, in other words. Having created the monster, the media are now feeling very much like Dr. Frankenstein, proud of the creation but dismayed at its reality and potential for harm.
Reagans don't come along very often. He was a lazy bastard but he wasn't a thin skinned blowhard who lashed out at everybody who wasn't him. I'm afraid that's going to be a common problem with the "stars" the GOP loves to run. None of them has the temperament for the job nor the laziness that would allow them to accept orders from on high like Reagan did even before dementia took hold.

2) He's a showman, a good one. Trashy, abrasive, basically an asshole, but a showman. None of the other contenders have anything like the kinds of chops The Donald has. They're all boring or awkward or both. People and the media are highly attracted by the kind of shiny that Trump is and they can't help but stare at him.
And though Trump is getting the cold shoulder from the Koch king makers, he's so disgustingly rich, he could devote 1 billion dollars of his supposed 10 billion dollar fortune on his Presidential run, even as an independent in the GE and that spend won't break his bank even a little bit.
Trump can stay in the race until he, personally, bores of it. Being shunned by the establishment, or the fringe, or both has zero impact on a guy with that much money. Trump can stay in this thing as long as he wants, and there isn't a damn thing anybody can do about it.
